BBC - WARNER CHRISTMAS BUYERS GUIDE
With Christmas fast upon it is the time to start thinking about presents and of course here at Memorable TV we think the ideal present is that DVD box set of your favourite show and over the next few days we are going to be bringing you some of the stand out releases of the last 12 months as well as competitions and more.
First up is the BBC's amazing Planet Earth (released by BBC Warner), this five disc set is without question the most amazing natural history show you will ever see. Narrated by the legendary Sir David Attenborough it's an 11 part look at the world we inhabit with each episode covering a different part of the planet so there are episodes which look at shallow seas, deserts, mountains etc.
There are so many scenes that will live with you forever in Planet Earth, some breath taking, some heart breaking, all amazing. We all known that we are in for some hard times on planet Earth in the future and this series, without being preachy about it, really does make you think about where we and the Earth's other inhabitants are going to end up. Each episode also features a ten minute behind the scenes Planet Earth Diaries and there is a whole host of extras including a special three part series called Planet Earth the Future. Quite simply stunning.
On a similar note the BBC Atlas of the Natural World: Africa and Europe (BBC Warner) is another sumptuous boxset from the worlds best Natural History documentary makers, this is a brilliant 6 disc set that pulls together four classic series (Wild Africa, Congo, The First Eden and Europe: A Natural History) to look at how natural history, geology and the human footprint has changed across Africa and Europe since the dawn of civilisation.
There is a massive 12 hours worth of programming in the set that once again features the lovely David Attenborough (he has a real way of almost whispering in your ear to make for a truly personal viewing experience) is amongst the narrators. For any lover of wildlife and natural history, this is another must have.
We have a great competition for you to get involved with too, one of the best kids shows on TV and definitely the one with the funkiest theme tune is Charlie and Lola, volume 6, which is just out from BBC America, is a festive themed one called How Many More Minutes Until Christmas, we have three copies to give away. In it Charlie and Lola are very excited about Christmas and preperations are going well until Lola makes a mistake with her Christmas wish list to Santa. Besides the double length Christmas special there are 5 other stories as well as some cute extras, oh and not to mention the absolutely brilliant theme tune. We have 3 copies of this great dvd up for grabs and to win a copy all you have to do is tell us who created Charlie and Lola. To enter you have to be a subscriber of our newsletter service. If you haven't signed up for this yet then what are you waiting for, a daily newsletter of all the latest stories, comps, reviews, features and news happening in the world of Memorable TV. The Snow Queen is another gem from BBC Warner, it's a star studded version of Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tale about a young boy who is kidnapped by the evil Snow Queen, his foster mother (Juliet Stevenson) and her daughter Gerda (the rising soprano Sydney White) mount a rescue mission. What really sets this movie apartment is the fact that it is pretty much all rendered in green screen cgi effects with stunning Victorian flavoured visuals to match the timeless story. Highly stylised (there are talking flowers, ravens and reindeer), wonderfully cast and shot through with the that special BBC story telling charm that they are masters of.
It's actually quite a dark tale but the mix of song, animation and the haunting soundtrack all combine to create something truly magical. The music, by Paul K Joyce, is performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This is a marvellous treat for the whole family and is not to be missed.
Finally for today we have Doctor Who The Complete Third Season guaranteed to make any scifi fan happy. The series just keeps getting better and better, David Tennant is, in our opinion, the best Doctor ever, new or old series, perfectly judging the dynamic of the series and understanding its history very well indeed, his Doctor has just the right measure of humour and cavalier stop at nothing action man to appeal to pretty much all viewers and whilst Freema Agyeman as new assistant Martha Jones had an uphill battle to overcome fan favorite Billie Piper as Rose Tyler she actually really made the role her own, particularly in the three part finale.
