ADAM ADAMANT LIVES

UK / BBC One / 29x50 minute episodes / Broadcast 23 June 1966 - 25 March 1967

Script Consultant: Tony Williamson / Music: David Lee / Theme sung by Kathy Kirby / Producer: Verity Lambert

With the Avengers cutting such a dash on the commercial channel the BBC were keen to come up with a successful action adventure hero - enter stage left Edwardian Adventurer Adam Adamant. Adam's style of dress would also be a definite influence on the Jon Pertwee era of Doctor Who

Frozen in 1902 by his arh rival The Face and revived into the heart of the swinging Sixties, Adamant is a man very much out of time. After coming to terms with his new surroundings, Adam is joined, in best Doctor Who style by a pair of companions, in the shape of major fan Georgina Jones and his right hand man William E. Simms, a former music hall artist. Adam soon got back into his adventuring ways, all the time adjusting to his new world of bright lights, loud music, dolly birds, The Beatles and The Stones.

Using skills such as sword fighting and boxing, the highly chivalrous but ruthless Adamant tackles, over the course of 29 episodes, all manner of evil villains. Season two upped the ante by re-introducing Adam's arch enemy The Face (so called because he wore an unsettling leather mask to disguise his true identity.)

One of the key influences on a certain Austin Powers and a definite companion to the Avengers - the two shows shared some of the same writers and many of the plots and villains could have quite easily cropped up in episodes of either show. Guest stars included well known faces such as Sheila Fearn, Charles "Bud" Tingwell,Adrienne Corri, John Le Mesurier, Colin Jeavons, Peter Vaughan, Talfryn Thomas, Annette Andre, Michael Ripper, Patrick Troughton, Iain Cuthbertson, Michael Sheard, Judy Parfitt, Kate O'Mara, Erik Chitty, Jean Marsh and Peter Bowles.

The show was made in black and white by the BBC and not all the episodes still exist.
