THE ADVENTURES OF SIR LANCELOT

UK / ITV Network -ITC-Sapphire / 30x30 minute episodes / Broadcast 1956-57 in black and white

Executive Producer:Hannah Weinstein / Composer:Edwin Astley / Producers: Sidney Cole, Dallas Bower, Bernard Knowles

Not as well remembered these days as The Adventures of Robin Hood but The Adventures of Sir Lancelot was back in the mid 1950's every bit as popular as its Sherwood Forest cousin and made a star out of William Russell (who would go on to become one of Doctor Who's first companions). The theme song made it plain that Sir Lancelot was the bravest knight the world had ever seen and he was also the Queen's personal champion and looked after her at the court of Camelot.

The series was, like Hood, made at Nettlefold Studios with much of the same crew and there was even some location work filmed at Arlington Castle. It tapped into all our ideas of Arthurian mythology, updating the setting from the dour 6th century dark ages to the gleaming silver of the 1300's and although the series was researched at Oxford the fabled romance between Lancelot and Queen Guinevere was played down - legend said that Sir Lancelot was actually the real father of Sir Galahad.
