The Cliffhanger
A staple of American and Australian TV, it seemed at one time that no show was worth its airtime unless it featured a cliffhanger.
USA

DALLAS
Surely king of the cliffhangers, what with Patrick Duffy coming back to life in the shower negating all of the season that had just and in 1980 the infamous Who Shot J.R campaign that had seemingly the whole world on the edge of its seat.

DYNASTY
Not to be outdone the producers of Dynasty decided to put all their eggs in one basket with an avalanche, a shooting and a fall from a balcony. Would any of the cast survive?

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
Buffy's act of self sacrifice with her tombstone reading "she saved the world. A lot."

THE SIMPSONS
The infamous JR spoofing of Who Shot Mr Burns (who would've believed it of little Maggie).

ALF
A bit of a Dodo this one, the last episode seeing Alf captured by the government (and then the show was cancelled - Doh!)

FRIENDS
Ross Marries.... "I Ross, take thee Rachel" oops, oh dear, Ross was marrying the English Emily and couldn't get Rachel out of his head.

MELROSE PLACE
Kimberly turns up to blow up the complex, promising to kill off most of the cast, however only Jane's boss ending up biting the bullet.

CHEERS
Sam proposes on the phone, but who to? Diane or Janet....(turned out to be Diane of course).

AUSTRALIA

A COUNTRY PRACTICE
The whole town of Wandin Valley is threatened by an unexploded bomb.

SONS AND DAUGHTERS
1985 was practically a whole year of cliffhangers what with a brother and sister getting married (to each other), a plane crash and someone out to get Caroline Morrell as well as Fiona battling cancer.

HOME AND AWAY
Will she won't she, 1992's Sophie giving up her baby storyline. The discovery in 1993 of Angel having a three year old child.

NEIGHBOURS
1995's love triangle storyline involving Annalise, Stonefish and Sam.
1997's spectacular car crash involving Ben.
1999's storyline of Drew risking his life in a fire rescue just after proposing to Libby.

NUMBER 96
In 1975 the producers took the step of killing off quite a few of the cast in a spectacular bomb explosion.
