Documentary series following the lives of Sydney Lifeguards on one of
the world's, and Australia's, most famous stretch of Beach.
The series is a dramatic and informative look at surf rescue on Bondi
Beach. This is the story of the fulltime council lifeguards that patrol
Bondi 365 days a year and are the unsung heroes of summer. Last summer
alone they conducted 2,500 rescues, almost four times as many as the better-known volunteer lifesavers in red and yellow.
While the lifeguards and lifesavers often work in tandem, the lifeguards have the ultimate responsibility for looking after the 2.5 million visitors that come to Bondi Beach every year.
Bondi Rescue intimately follows the lifeguard’s work over the summer
of 2005-2006. A single lifeguard at Bondi Beach will sometimes save twenty people from drowning in one day. These professional watermen pull swimmers, surfers and fishermen from treacherous seas in a job where minutes, even seconds, matter. Summer crowds frequently exceed 20,000
people.
