THE
BLOCK
9
Network / x60mins 2x90mins 1x120mins / 2003-2004
Reality.
Hosted by JAMIE DURIE from Backyard Blitz, THE BLOCK featured 4
couples chosen from over 2000 hopefuls, ADAM and FIONA, WARREN
and GAVIN, AMITY and PHIL, and KYLIE and PAUL. With budgets of just
$40,000 each, the couples had 11 weeks to out-design and out-decorate
each other in a struggle to complete the best apartment in a four
apartment block purpose built by 9 for the series. In the 12th week,
the winning apartment was decided by the toughest judges of all –
the buying public. The four apartments went to public auction on
Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th August, with each couple keeping the
profits made from the sale, so the better their renovation, the more
money they made. The couple who made the most money at auction also
won the grand prize of $100,000. Adam and Fiona emerged as the winners.
Season two was even more successful than the first, the four couples,
Richard and Steven, Matt and Jane, Jason and Kirsten & Andrew and
Jamie spending much of their time bitching about each other and
forming little cliques to do each other down, not a likeable soul
amongst them but entertaining nevertheless. Winners for season two
were Andrew and Jamie (this couple had only arrived on the series
three weeks after everyone else as another couple, Danny and Monique,
withdrew from the series following some unwanted press intrusions into
their personal life).

Crime
drama series. Long running popular soap about the professional and
personal lives of the uniformed cops of outback/rural town Mount
Thomas/ Although quite a small town Mount Thomas is seemingly crime
ridden with every crime imaginable occurring in the town at one time or
another. One of the most popular storylines was the long running
relationship between Maggie and PJ. Fans got a major shock when main player Maggie Doyle was
gunned down in the year 2000 whilst looking into police corruption.
The end of March 2001 saw the show notch up it's 300th episode. The
old Mount Thomas Police Station is in reality a normal family home.
Most of the location filming is done in Williamstown. Only three
original cast members are still in the show John Wood; Martin Sacks
and Julie Nihill. The show is seen in over 70 countries. There
was a 2 hour explosion filled episode to mark the launch of the 2003
season and early in 2006 Channel Seven made a big splash of announcing
that the show would end at the end of its then current season tying
with Homicide for longest running Aussie cop show.

the problems that him (as a white man) playing Boney may cause "Boney
is pretty fair, with blue eyes, He's travelled a lot and had a
university education, white people in the city rarely pick him as
having aboriginal blood, but when he is in the bush the Aboriginals
and the bushmen can pick him."

Drama series set
during and after World War II about a young woman, divorced at 17, who
sets out to make a new and independent life for herself. An
illegitimate child, Sonja Davies was born an 'outsider' with a natural
sense of justice and an instinct to fight for the underdog, which
brought her into early conflict with her middle-class family. Driven
by the need to be accepted and to belong Sonja runs away from home at
16, and a year later has been married and divorced. Accepted as a
trainee nurse during the war Sonja's life reflects the drama of that
time. Her experiences only serve to strengthen her political ideals -
the loss in battle of her GI lover, the birth of her child out of
wedlock then separation from her baby daughter, and a prolonged life
and death struggle with tuberculosis contracted whilst nursing. As the
war ends Sonja is in hospital close to death. She is rediscovered by
Charlie, a returned New Zealand soldier with whom she had an
'understanding' before he went off to the war. His engagement to
another woman is broken off and he devotes himself to helping Sonja
recover her health. They marry and are reunited with Penny, her young
daughter, to become a family. New Zealand's post-war recovery period
with its great opportunities and even greater difficulties is
reflected in Sonja and Charlie's back breaking efforts to clear their
recently purchased land for fruit growing. Shortages, bureaucracy,
lack of facilities and finally Sonja's ill health, hamper their
efforts to enjoy the new life everyone was promised after the war. A
reluctant move back to the city is turned to advantage when Sonja and
Charlie are made aware of the different kind of contribution they can
make to help get the country back on its feet again. Their socialist
principles are put to constructive use when they combine forces with
others of a like mind and begin the 'grassroots' work that will occupy
the rest of their lives. From her earlier days as a nurse Sonja found
her strength in groups of women and it is among women she begins her
political career. A 'women only sit-in' on a railway line threatened
with closure - a gesture that scandalised a nation in 1955 when a
woman's place was definitely in the home. This is the extraordinary
story of an ordinary woman - a woman who emerges as a survivor but for
whom mere survival is not enough, either for herself or for the rest
of society.
