Creator:

Soap
drama series. Home and Away is an Australia early evening soap
detailing episodes in the lives of the residents of coast town Summer
Bay. The show began with Tom and Pippa Fletcher moving to the bay to
take over the running of a caravan park and with the couple also
fostering a number of kids, including the highly rebellious Bobby,
young Sally, troubled Carly, along with heart throb Frank. Other
important characters included school headmaster Donald Fisher (known
as Flathead to his pupils), shop keeper Alf Stewart and his wife Ailsa
(Ailsa had once spent time in prison for murdering her abusive
father). Early characters also included the 'drop kicks' and
none too bright Lance Smart and Martin Dibble, Alf's scheming daughter
Roo and his busybody spinster sister Celia. In later years the show
has tended to focus more on the younger characters with the Fletchers
have long since departed (Tom died and Pippa having remarried and been
widowed once more moved away from the Bay). The show began with a one
hour pilot episode broadcast in January 1988 and besides Australia it
is probably most popular in the UK. The 3000th episode on 9 March

Sitcom.
Italian immigrant taxi driver Enzo Pacelli is determined to keep his
old country's traditions alive, his children are, however, true blue
Ozzies. The behind the scenes crew and star were English. Vince Powell
had this to say about the show. "(The Series) came about because ABC got in touch with Thames wanting tips on situation
comedy writing and I ended up going to Australia and while I was there I realised that every
taxi I took was driven by either a Greek or an Italian who couldn't speak proper English. So
I came up with this idea about an Italian taxi driver who'd emigrated with his wife to Sydney and 17 years or so later his kids speak like Australians while he and his wife still speak
Italian and then into their lives comes Enzo's widowed mother who didn't speak a word
of English at all. It was a wonderful series, we did three or four series of that in fact."

Network-Crawford / 510x60m-e / 1964-75
Creator:
Hector Crawford
Crime
drama series. A very influential
series in Australian TV history and one of the most popular. The show
helped to pave the way for popular TV production in Australia. The
series basically detailed the cases of a group of Homicide cops.
Victoria's old police headquarters based in Russell Street was often
used for exteriors. The show won 11 Logies, 5 Penguins, 2 Awgies and 4
Sammy's. Homicide
was based on their successful radio serial D24 [known as
C.I.B. outside Melbourne] and it took a year to get the
show on air following a pilot episode. The first
episode, 'The Stunt', went to air on HSV 7 at 7:30 on
Tuesday, October 20, 1964, with Ian Turpie playing the
first victim. Most episodes were based on actual police
files and the series also made much use of actually
shooting on location as opposed to the then usual
practice of shooting in the studio. The last three years
of production saw the show shot completely on film and
in colour.
