ACADEMIC
7
Network / x30m-e / 1970-early 80's
A quiz
hosted by Andrew Harwood which saw school teams from all over
Australia battling it out in a general knowledge format. Graham
Thomas contributed the following additional information:-
The
SA version was
hosted by firstly Alec McAskill (ADS7 newsreader) and later Sandy
Roberts (now Seven sports commentator). I was captain of my
school's team on the South Australian show in 1978 in Adelaide where
Roberts (at that stage mainly known as co-host of children's
programme 'Young 7' and music show 'Sounds Unlimited') hosted.
On the second night we appeared, Eastern States host Andrew Harwood
produced or directed the show (as the SA regular was sick).
Harwood also used to host the national finals featuring NSW,
VIC & SA champion schools.
The
show pitted three school teams of three against each other.
Each team's captain chose one of ten packets (of ten questions)
which the team had to answer in rounds one and two. Each team
also had to answer questions after seeing a short film piece.
The final round was a 'Beat The Buzzer' round, with the clock
running down and teams required to 'buzz' before attempting to
answer questions. Prizes ranged from Parker Ballpoint Pen sets
(for losing contestants) to encyclopaediae and the like for winning
schools.
