JACKAROO

Period drama serial. Jack Simmons, a half cast, whilst working on a farm in Western Australia falls in love with white Clare Mallory, when she falls pregnant her father is determined to split them up. Filmed in Western Australia and on a budget of $4.5 million. The critics didn't like it but the public did.

A performance show featuring some well known jazz names playing in the studio. Simulcast on FM radio (an Australian first) and hosted by Jim McLeod.

 

JAZZ MEETS FOLK

ABC / 13x30m-e / 1964 black and white

Producer/Director: Lyle Brydon

As the title says a music show dedicated to both jazz and folk, the show came from the Astor Hotel in Woolloomooloo in Sydney. Hosted by Alan Dean with regulars Marian Henderson, The Bryce Rhode Quintet and The Harbour Singers (featuring Helen Reddy).

Weeknight mix of variety and chat hosted by John Collins. Unfortunately cancelled after two weeks. Other regulars included Andrew Harwood and Keith Smith.

Drama. A 16 year old Sydney girl contemplates suicide when her mother gets a divorce and decides to remarry.

General knowledge quiz show based on the well known US original in which the contestants had to supply the questions to answers already given. Shown weekday afternoons and hosted by Bob Sanders, Mal Walden, Graham Webb and Andrew Hardwood. Revived by the Ten Network in 1993 with Tony Barber as host.

JILTED

Beyond / 1x90m-e / 1987

Writer/Director: Bill Bennett / Producers: Bill Bennett, Jenny Day 

A contemporary love story; set on a wild and isolated island. He is working at a small tourist resort escaping from a torn past. She is running from a failed marriage. Neither wants to take another chance. Yet, despite themselves, they do.

Comedy sketch show starring the Irish stand up comic Jimeoin. Regulars were Glenn Robbins,  Bob Franklin, Rachel Griffiths, Tamara Cook. Brian Nankervis, Diana Reed, Brad Oakes, Wilhelmina Stracke and Angus Smallwood.

 

JIMEOIN'S TEA TOWEL TOURS: Ireland

Ten / 1x60m-e / Tuesday 7 August 2001 / 8.30pm

Comedy documentary in which Irish-Australian stand up comic Jimeoin buys a tea towel full of famous Northen Irish landmarks like the Giant's Causeway and Dunluce Castle and proceeds to visit them in person.

 

JIMMY

A mix of talk and variety hosted by Jimmy Hannan, this was Hannan's first night time show, regulars included James Smillie, George Whaley and the New Chord Trio.

 

THE JIMMY HANNAN SHOW

A weekly variety series starring Jimmy Hannan, his co-star was Barbara Rogers. Produced in Melbourne.

 

THE JIMMY WHEELER SHOW

ABC / 4x30m-e / 1960 black and white

Producer/Director: Harry Pringle

Variety series starring the English Jimmy Wheeler. Regulars included Henry Gilbert, Babs Mackinnon and Neil Williams.

 

JOAN AND LESLIE 

Channel 7-HSV / 13x30m-e / 1969 (First Episode: 3 October 1969)

Writers: Gerald Kelsey, Dick Sharples, Ros Stevenson

Sitcom. Married English couple Joan and Leslie move to Australia where Leslie the husband has taken on a job as an agony aunt for a newspaper (his column was called Letters to the Lovelorn), the pair married in real life had appeared in several English sitcoms with some small degree of success but this never matched their earlier efforts.

Period drama serial. Around 1900 two couples attempt to make a go of their lives despite having to contend with many hardships. The series is said to have cost $2.4 million. Jack Thompson was initially going to direct the series, filmed in Sydney and Mudgee.

One off comedy variety/special starring comic actor John Bluthal who later went onto headline the sitcom Home Sweet Home. Guests included Al Thomas and Ruth Cracknell.

Teen music show featuring new talent and presented by world amateur swimming champion John Konrads.

Title for a series of disparate documentaries from around the world. Introduced by John Laws.

 

JOHN MAHON

10 Network / x60m-e / 1970

A talent show for amateur artists who were only allowed to audition on the proviso that they didn't appear on TV regularly. There were two adjudicators, a resident judge and a guest judge. Hosted by John Mahon.

 

JOHNNY FARNUM

7 Network / x90m-e / 1970 (First Episode: Monday 5 October / 4pm)

A children's afternoon entertainment show hosted by singer Johnny Farnum, the show included an appearance of the Revolution pop show featuring clips of the latest chart hits and also animated US shows like Shazam!

 

THE JOHNNY GREDULA SHOW

ABC (and then 7 Network) / x30m-e / 1957-60 black and white

Light entertainment variety series starring Hungarian singer Johnny Gredula. Initially on the ABC under the above title but then switched to 7 under the title of  Johnny Gredula Sings. Michael Charlton introduced the shows and music was by the Noel Gilmour Quintet.

 

THE JOHNNY O'KEEFE SHOW

7 Network / x60m-e / 1961-62 black and white

Music based variety series starring rock n roller Johnny O'Keefe fresh from his appearances on "Six O'Clock Rock". Also featured were Claire Bail and the ATN Choir and Orchestra. 

 

JOHN SAFRAN’S MUSICAL JAMBOREE

SBS / 6x60 minute episodes / 2002 (First Episode: Monday 2 July at 8.30pm )

A laugh filled documentary type series in which John Safran cast a very idiosyncratic eye over the music business including such delights as sending up eminem (with his own Jewish boy band) and scamming radio talk show host Steve Price.

 

JOHN SINGLETON

A show with two formats, in the first ad man John Singleton tried his hand at a typical Saturday night variety/talk show (which failed dismally) then following up pretty quickly with a current affairs show of the same name.

JONAH

ATN 7 / 20x30m-e / 1962 (First Episode: 15 October) black and white

Writer: Michael Plant / Executive Producer: Harry Dearth / Producers: David Cahill, Ken Hannam / Directors: David Cahill, Ken Hannam

Historical drama series. Episodes in the life of Jonah Locke in 19th century  Sydney Town from his time living rough to his later rising to become a powerful man, ABC later purchased the series as did (which was rare for the time) English TV company Associated Television (ATV). Filmed at Artransa Park Studios as Frenchs Forest the series was stopped at episode 20 because of a dispute with actors union equity.

JONAH

Period drama serial. During the early part of the 20th century in down town Sydney young Jonah lives on the streets but later rises in the business world letting nothing stand in his way as he climbs to the top. The turning point for Jonah was his marriage to factory girl Ada Yabsley. Jonah was filmed in both Redfearn and Pyrmont in Sydney with various street sets also being built at French's Forest and based on original 1901 photographs of Sydney.

Young Talent Time copy talent show for kids, hosted by "Skeeter" Kemsley.

 

JUNIOR JURY

0-10 Network / x30m-e / Mid 1970's 

A 'Beauty and the Beast' style issues debate featuring four teenage school kids from Adelaide and hosted by Warwick Prime. This show was probably also telecast
interstate on the 0/10 Network; it was certainly screened in Perth as SAS 10 (Adelaide) and 7 (Perth) were sister stations which shared programmes and concepts.

 

JUST FOR THE RECORD

10 Network-A Couple 'A Cowboys / 15x60m-e / 1988

Music: Murray Burns, Kevin Bayley, Colin Bayley / Producer: John Luscombe

A Guinness Book of Records type show with people going for world records live on the show and so on. Hosts were Brett Clements, Philip Tanner, gary Who, Louise Wallace and Geoff Fitzpatrick.

 

JUST JAZZ

ABC / x30m-e / 1962-63 black and white

Music show with the emphasis obviously on Jazz. Broadcast from Graeme Bell's Sydney Jazz Club. Initially known as 'Trad Pad' and then by edition three as Trad Jazz and then Just Jazz by 1963.
