Think hanging
around on a film set and hobnobbing with the stars all day is easy?
Think again…From the comedy genius behind the successful mockumentary
series, The Office, Extras is a sharp new comedy set around the mundane
tedium of life as a lowly supporting artist. Bitter, grumpy and
sarcastic, Andy Millman (Ricky Gervais) gave up his day job five years
ago in the hope of achieving fame and fortune as an actor. So far he's
yet to land a speaking part, let alone saunter down the red carpet to
pick up a BAFTA.
He remains
optimistic however, as rubbing shoulders with the A-list onset only
serves to reinforce his belief that the big time is just a job or two
away. If only his agent (Stephen Merchant) wasn't so stupendously
useless. Andy and best friend Maggie Jacobs (Ashley Jensen), also a
bit-part actor of little repute, can usually be found in the green room,
swigging coffee, bitching about their peers or whingeing about their lot
in life. In tonight's first episode, Andy and Maggie both find
themselves working on a gritty drama about atrocities in the Balkans
directed by Hollywood star Ben Stiller. Andy is fed up with being pushed
around for little reward and no lines. Its time to take action! He
befriends the fragile writer, who tragically lost his wife in the Balkan
conflict. This doesn't stop Andy from pressuring him for a line, going
so far as to offer him a bribe. Maggie pursues the man of her dreams,
until she discovers that physically, he's less than perfect.
