CORONATION STREET
Granada / x30m-e / 1960-continuing
Creator: Tony Warren / Theme Music: Eric Spear.
Coronation Street is
one of the longest running continuing drama series in the world. Started in 1960
and set in the Manchester borough of Weatherfield the show depicts incidents in
the lives of the people living in the terraced Coronation Street of the title.
One of these characters - Ken Barlow - has been in the show since episode one.
Amazing to think that the show was just supposed to run for 13 episodes and was
to have been called Florizel Street. The early years of the show followed the
kitchen sink school of realism then current in UK TV and Cinema with the show
dominated by the feisty Elsie Tanner and the hairnet wearing battle axe Ena
Sharples. The focal point of the show has always been the Rovers Return the pub
on the corner of Coronation Street and in the shows early years there was a snug
bar where Ena and her two friends Martha Longhurst and Minnie Caldwell would
hold court.
Early editions of the show were even broadcast live. Arthur Lowe now most famous
for playing Captain Mainwaring in Dad's Army was also
a regular in the sixties playing shop owner Leonard Swindley. Other key
characters from the sixties and seventies were Len Fairclough (tough builder who
later married nightclub singer and paper shop owner Rita), Hilda and her
layabout husband Stan Ogden, Jerry Booth, second longest running character Emily
Bishop, pub landlady Annie Walker and her put upon husband Jack along with
Albert Tatlock (Ken Barlow's uncle). The seventies and early eighties also saw
the introduction of characters who are still in the show today including Mike
Baldwin, Jack and Vera Duckworth, Deidre Langton-Barlow-Rashid and Curly Watts.
The show has had guest appearances from practically every well known UK actor at
some stage (with most appearing in small roles before they became famous (Martin
Shaw, Gorden Kaye, Joanne Whalley, Peter Noone, Prunella Scales, Richard
Beckinsale, Davy Jones, Ben Kingsley and Joanna Lumley to name just a few).
Amazingly the show has stayed at the top of the ratings in the UK throughout its
history and though thousands of actors have come and gone the shows storylines
have basically stayed the same (Ordinary people doing ordinary things).
There have been over fifty weddings in Coronation Street over the years (quite a
few of them it has to be said involving Ken Barlow and Mike Barlow).
On Friday 8 December 2000 the programme celebrated its 40th anniversary by
broadcasting a special hour long live edition.

CRIME TRAVELLER
BBC1/Carnival / 8x50m-e / 1997
Writer: Anthony Horowitz / Titles: Red Pepper / Producer: Brian Eastman
Crime drama series with a scifi twist,
detective Jeff Slade discovers that forensic scientist Holly Turner,
working within his department has actually got a working time machine, the twist
being that the machine can only go back in time about half a day, just far back
enough to gather evidence from the scenes of crimes (often as they happen).
The machine was invented by Holly's father and she is initially unwilling to use
it because her father failed to return from the past in time and became trapped
in the "loop of infinity". Slade eventually persuades and for eight
cases the pair travelled back in time just far enough to solve the crime, they
had to be especially careful not to bump into their past selves.
The series was pretty light hearted and didn't take itself too seriously with
moments such as Slade being convinced that he could use the time machine to win
the lottery (of course he could do no such thing). The series was pretty much in
the vein of the late 1960's ITC series like Department S and Randall and Hopkirk.
The show never really set the public alight and was cancelled after this one
series.

CROSSROADS
ATV/Central / 4510x30m-e / 1964-88
Creators: Hazel Adair, Peter Ling / Theme Music: Tony Hatch
Crossroads is an often derided UK soap that ran from the 1960's to the 1980's telling stories of the staff and customers of a Birmingham Motel, the Crossroads of the title. Main stay of the show for most of its run was motel owner Meg Richardson. Because the show was filmed as live with minimal rehearsal time and with some of the sets being on the flimsy side the show often had the mickey taken out of it most memorably by Victoria Wood in her Acorn Antiques sketch in her As Seen On TV series. Long running characters included the wooly hatted handyman Benny, Meg's daughter Jill and her son Sandy (later confined to a wheelchair), smoothie David Hunter and the equally smooth Adam Chance, cleaner, the highly forgetful Amy Turtle ("lines, what lines", Scottish chef Shughie McFee, receptionist Diane Lawton and waitress Marilyn Gates (Sue Nicholls who played Marilyn would later go on to become a mainstay of Coronation Street). Even though mocked by the critics the show was very popular with the viewers and Paul McCartney even recorded his own version of the tune (used on the show for special dramatic or sad endings). Crossroads never really recovered from losing Meg (even though the producers had written her out) and having the motel burn down in 1981. The new motel was renamed Crossroads, King's Oak.The show was to have originally to have been called The Midland Road. Initial producer of the show Reg Watson later went on to help create the Australian soap Neighbours. The first words on the show were spoken by Jill (she said "Crossroads Motel. May I help you?" The show was shown weeknights but in most ITV regions appeared at different times of the early evening. The ITV Network have recently started broadcasting a new version of the show.

Producer: Kay Patrick / Executive
Producer: Sharon Bloom
A revival of the above 'classic' soap with three original cast members (in the
shape of Jill Harvey, Adam Chance and Doris Luke), even the theme tune stayed
the same (albeit in a new arrangement), the only difference being that
Crossroads is now a four star hotel. The revival lasted for just over a year
before being rested and was re-launched again in January 2003 with a mostly new
cast and an attempt at a more glitzy Dynasty-like feel. This relaunch also
failed and the show ended for good on 30 May 2003. In a final bizarre twist
ending (reminiscent of a certain Dallas storyline) the entire revival since 2001
was revealed to be a dream with Brummie supermarket girl Angela Samson (Jane
Asher) daydreaming the whole thing while working on a checkout - the staff of
her hotel were revealed to be her supermarket co-workers and customers.
