THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT
Thames / 1x75m-e / 1975
Writer: Philip Mackie /
Producer: Barry Hanson / Music: Carl Davis / Design: Allan Cameron
Period drama that tells the
true story of flamboyant homosexual Quentin Crisp from the early 1930's to the
then present day.
Winning numerous awards, including a BAFTA for John Hurt as best actor The Naked
Civil Servant is a very funny piece of work with a great script by Philip Mackie,
the 30's and 40's are extremely well captured, remember these were times when to
be homosexual was a huge no-no.
John Hurt, who also provides a voice over narration for the film, captures Crisp
to a tee and there are some fine supporting performances from well known faces
including Roger Lloyd Pack as a gay friend of Quentin's as well as Patricia
Hodge and a very young Phil Daniels.

NIGHT AND DAY
ITV1 / x30m, x60m / 2001 - 2003
A new UK produced daytime soap. It was about a couple of families with
intertwined lives. Often slightly surreal with fantasy sequences, the main story
was about 16 year old Jane Harper who went missing after the first week of
episodes and was thereafter only really seen in flashback sequences. Initially
it was shown at 5pm thrice-weekly with a late night omnibus edition that
contained more adult material (although this only really amounted to mild
swearing). After a few months with poor ratings the daytime showing was dropped
and shown in a late night 60 minute slot only - despite this it was never really
made as a post-watershed programme that reflected the late night timeslot
(usually about midnight). It came to a close with the final episode on 5 June
2003 with the plotlines resolved by moving forward 4 years to see how things had
turned out. The theme song was sung by Kylie Minogue.
Some main characters:- GEORGINA WALKER as Jane Harper / LYSETTE ANTHONY as
Roxanne Doyle / JOE MCGANN as Alex Wells / LESLEY JOSEPH as Rachel Culgrin /
GLYNIS BARBER as Fiona Brake / CATHY TYSON as Steph McKenzie / SALLY DEXTER as
Natalie Harper / STEPHANIE LEONIDAS as Della Wells / BRADLEY WALSH as Woody
NIGHT
FLIGHT
BBC1 / 2x80m-e / 2 February
2002 9:00pm and 10:40pm
Writer: William Ivory; Director:
Nicholas Renton; Hilary Salmon
Drama. The story of a Lancaster bomber pilot who meets a former comrade at a
commemoration service 50 years later. Set in the present day and 1943. Both
parts were shown on the same night with a 20-minute News in-between - although
part one had no closing credits, part 2 started again with new opening titles
and star actors' names repeated - so most likely it was made as a 2-parter
rather than a 1-parter simply broken up by the News (as films sometimes are).

KENNETH CRANHAM as Ted Atwell / BARBARA FLYNN as Moira / ALEC NEWMAN as 1940s
