All He Ever Wanted by Anita Shreve
Publishers: Little and Brown

Reviewer: Fran

The first time Professor Nicholas Van Tassel lays eyes upon Etna Bliss is after during a fire at his beloved Thrupp College.  This chance meeting sparks off an intense interest that unravels his previously uneventful life of academia.  Etna becomes an obsession with him and despite her lukewarm response he persists in his pursuit of her.

Beginning in the early 1900’s this story is told by Nicholas as an old man writing in his journal. His relationship with Etna is relayed through his eyes as a way of explaining his actions for his adult children.

The author has created two very unlikeable characters for this novel.  Nicholas is a ridiculous man who is obsessed with Etna and forces his attentions upon her.  She is a cold and selfish woman who would rather wallow in her own misery than move on after a lost love many years ago.

I really didn’t like this book at all, in fact thinking about it to write this is making me frown all over again.  If this miserable story is indicative of Anita Shreve’s style then I hope to not come across any of her other works, ever.
