Alternative 3 by Ken Mitchell
Publishers: Harper Collins

Reviewer: Buddy Holly

Everything you know is wrong!!!

Taking as it’s basis a 1977 BBC mockumentary that claimed the worlds elite scientists and brainiacs were being used in a highly top secret mission to set up an outpost on Mars this highly entertaining “factshun” (take some facts and then shun them) thriller posits that not only was the documentary true but so is every other conspiracy theory you’ve heard too.

The story begins in 1945 with the Russians heading quickly towards the heart of Berlin and Hitler’s bunker. Hitler though fakes his death and escapes in a new flying disc, hot new German technology. Cut to the present day where computer hacker Curtis Hatch takes part in a hacking contest that leads to him being offered the chance to win a million dollars to discover the whereabouts of two mysterious mpegs containing footage of the German flying discs. Also involved is Gina, another hacker genius who Hatch quickly falls for but who may not be all she seems, the two race headlong into a giant conspiracy where their lives are on the line.

Very fast paced and very witty, Alternative 3 is a rollercoaster read, packing in such delights as UFO’s, Hitler’s supposed death, what really happened to Princess Diana and more, with more twists and turns than an English country lane. Mitchell takes the ball and heads straight for touch, despite Hatch being seemingingly obsessed with U2, lets face it not every moment is a Bono moment, and despite his toe curling use of the word lappie to describe his laptop Mitchell is obviously a talent to watch, tapping into the internet zeitgeist and the modern worlds love of all things askew.  A very entertaining read.
