BABY IN A BACKPACK TO BHUTAN by Bunty Avieson
Publishers: Pan MacMillan

Reviewer: Fran

Bunty Avieson met Mal Watson on a blind date and it changed her life.  She travels to India to meet up with him and the experiences she has whilst there are enough for her to agree to leave her job at New Idea, throw her energies into writing and follow Mal as he travels for work throughout different countries.  Her next life-changing event is the arrival of their baby, Kathryn, conceived in Tibet and born in Australia .  When Mal needs to travel to Bhutan for work she blithely forges on despite the misgivings of herself, her family and her friends and uproots herself to follow him.

Whilst I think that Bunty Avieson has had some amazing experiences and met some truly interesting people in her travels it is an existence that I couldn't manage.  To me there is no real way to justify exposing such a new baby to those health risks inherent in those different culture for the purely selfish need to be close to the baby's' father.  This baby has seen and experienced things that I will only read about, however at three months, how much is she going to remember?

Despite my personal aversion to her lifestyle choices I did enjoy reading this book. Bunty Avieson writes in a very simple and easy to read fashion.  Her descriptions of the people she has met are warm and funny.  Her admiration for the country and its peoples' rings through everything she writes.  Her enthusiasm makes this a refreshing read.

This book is pretty much just a long travelogue but the way in which it is written makes it far more interesting to read than usual.  Her enthusiasm and fresh outlook are more fun to read than the standard world-weary tone they usually have.

It's interesting to note that whilst she didn't have enough confidence in their health system when it came time for her to deliver Kathryn, she did feel that it was adequate to manage any health issues that a three month old baby may have.
