THE SACK RACE

Comics Joseph Glavey and Laura Solon are shown starting new jobs and their challenge is to get sacked as near to 3pm on their first day as possible. Hidden cameras follow their progress. Following the broadcast of the first episode it disappeared from the schedules but then continued during February.
   

SATURDAY LIVE

Channel 4-LWT / 21 Episodes 11x90m-e 8x75m-e 2x80m-e / 1985-87 2 Seasons plus 1 special

Producers: Paul Jackson, Geoff Posner, Geoffrey Perkins 

Raucous live stand up show that featured the cream of British comedy talent, making stars of several of the performers, including Harry Enfield and Ben Elton (who hosted the whole of season 2), Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie appeared in every show but the first. Also appearing regularly were Adrian Edmondson and Rik Mayall (in their guise as The Dangerous Brothers). Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, French and Saunders, Nick Hancock and Lenny Henry.  Others to appear were Rowan Atkinson, Morwenna Banks, Julian Clary, Robbie Coltrane, Paul Merton, Peter Cook, Frankie Howerd, Jasper Carrott, Spike Milligan and many many more. The series was modelled on the successful US show Saturday Night Live. See also below for the 1996 revival of the same name.

 

SATURDAY LIVE

London Weekend Television / 8x60m-e / 1996 1 June - 20 July Saturday 10.10pm

A revival of the 1980's classic (see above), this time hosted by Lee Hurst. The show pretty much came and went this time without anyone noticing, guests were distinctly less thrilling than the original also and included Tim Vine, TRony Hawks, and Alistair McGowan.

 

THE SATURDAY NIGHT ARMISTICE

Satire/topical based humour in a kind of That Was the Week That Was Way. The team was also responsible for the classic show The Day Today.  Reflecting the fact that season two was broadcast on a Thursday the season was known as The Friday Night Armistice. Special one called The Saturday Night Armistice Party Bucket (22 December 1995) / Special 2:- The Election Night Armistice (1 May 1997 1x180m-e) / Special 3:- The Christmas Armistice 29 December 1997 - Monday 10.50pm) / Special 4:- The Armistice Party Bucket 2 January 1998 Friday 10.25pm

 

SATURDAY STAYBACK

An attempt after the disastrous O.T.T. to mount a similar late night TISWAS style show for adults. Mostly sketch and stand up based the performers included Chris Tarrant, Helen Atkinson Wood, Phil Cool, Tony Slattery, Bob Carolgees and Suzanne Sinclair.

 

SEAN HUGHES IS THIRTY SOMETHING

C4-My World / 1x65 minute episode / 1995 (Friday 22 December - 10.10pm)

A stand up special that saw Sean Hughes getting reflective on his 30th birthday.

 

SECOMBE HERE!

BBC / 3x60 minute episodes / 1955 black and white

Writers: Jimmy Grafton, Eric Sykes, Spike Milligan, Harry Secombe / Producers: Bill Lyons, Albert Stevenson

Goonish themed humour (check out those writer credits!) from Harry Secombe his guests included fellow Goons Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers as well as Sam Kydd, Eric Sykes, Valentine Dyall and Libby Morris.  

 

A SHOW CALLED FRED

Associated-Rediffusion / 5x30m-e / 1956 2 May - 20 May Wednesdays 9.30pm

Writer: Spike Milligan / Producer/Director: Dick Lester

Anarchic, surreal sketch, a kind of TV Goons and following from the show The Idiot Weekly Price 2d. Peter Sellers headlined the cast and the show also featured Kenneth Connor, Valentine Dyall, Graham Stark, Patti Lewis and Max Geldray. See also Son of Fred

 

A SHOW OF MY OWN

A special for rising impressionist (at the time anyway) Dave Evans.

 

SHUT THAT DOOR!!

ATV / 13x30m-e / 1972-73 Season One: 18 August - 22 September 1972 / Season Two: 28 March - 9 May 1973

Writers: Peter Dulay, Bernie Sharp, Bryan Blackburn (season 2) / Producer/Director: Colin Clews

Larry Grayson in his first starring vehicle (after making waves on the show Saturday Variety) with his camp mannerisms well to the fore and much talk of invented characters like Slack Alice.

 

SID CAESAR INVITES YOU

BBC-Shellrick Productions / 13x30m-e / 1958 1 July - 23 September Tuesdays 8.00pm black and white

Writers: Mel Tonkin, Mel Brooks, Mike Stewart / Producer: Duncan Wood

A sketch series that saw US star Sid Caesar in the UK with a variation on his American series of the same name. Imogene Coca (a regular American sidekick) and Jeremy Hawk also featured.

 

THE SID JAMES SHOW

ATV (Saturday Spectacular) / 2x50m-e / 1961 11 March and 8 July  black and white

Writers: Sid Green and Dick Hills (1), Dave Freeman

A pair of rare sketch shows for Carry On star Sid James, also appearing in show two were Wilfred Bramble and Kenneth Connor.

 

SIMPLY SHEILA

BBC (Show of the Week) / 1x50minutes / 1968 (7 July - Sunday 8.15pm)

Producer: Sydney Lotterby

Sketch show showcasing the talents of Sheila Hancock, aided and abetted by Roy Kinnear, Lynda Marchal (aka La Plante) and Roddy Maude-Roxby. A high calibre of writers including Graham Chapman and John Cleese, Eric Idle and Peter Cook contributed. See also But Seriously - Sheila Hancock.

 

SING THE LADY OUT OF BED

BBC2 / 1x30 minute episode / 1974 (Thursday 12 December @ 9.00pm)

Writers: Peter Campbell, Roger Ordish / Producer: Dennis Main Wilson

Sketch show starring up and coming comedy duo Peter Lambert and Willie Ross aka Lambert and Ross. Also appearing were Dennis Waterman, Tony Selby and Mary Miller. 

 

THE SITCOM WEEKEND

Channel 4 / Broadcast 2 - 26 May 1997

A weekend fully devoted to the sitcom with films, classic episodes and documentaries. Also appearing were the following four original comedy pieces pastiching popular sitcoms, passed by without a murmer at the time but pretty significant in terms of casting featuring as they do future Little Britain and League of Gentlemen alumni. The four were. 
1. I'm Bland... Yet My Friends Are Crazy (Seinfeld) with Matt Lucas, David Walliams, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith, Bob Mortimer and Anna Francolini. 
2. My Gay Dads (My Two Dads) with Lucas, Walliams, Shearsmith and Jenny Evans. 
3. A Puppet Lives in My House (Alf) with Lucas, Walliams, Rebecca Front and Paul Putner 
4. Only Jerks and Horses (Only Fools and Horses) with Lucas, Walliams, Brian Bovell, Mark Gatiss and Paul Putner 

 

SLIGHTLY FILTHY

LWT (Regional Only) / 4x30m-e / 2001 (First Episode Friday 20 April / 11.30pm)

A sketch comedy series written by Brian Mitchell and Joseph Nixon and shown only in the London area.

 

SMACK THE PONY

Channel 4-Talkback / 22x30m-e / 1999-2002 

Producer: Victoria Pile / Executive Producer: Peter Fincham

Hip sketch show that was mainly written by it's three female stars (Fiona Allen, Doon Mackichan and Sally Phillips). The good thing about the show was the cast didn't limit themselves to dealing with women's 'issues'. Also involved in the shows were Sarah Alexander, Tamzin Griffin, Amanda Holden (occasional only), Darren Boyd, Cavan Clerkin, James Lance and Michael Wildman. Two specials with all new material were broadcast 26 Dec 2002 and 3 Jan 2003 (included in the above episode count).

 

THE SMELL OF REEVES AND MORTIMER

BBC2-Channel X / 12x30m-e / 1993-95 Season One: 21 September - 26 October 93 / Season Two: 5 May - 9 June 95

Writers: Vic Reeves, Bob Mortimer / Executive Producers: Charlie Higson, Alan Marke / Producer/Director: John Birkin

Sketch series follow up to Vic Reeves Big Night Out that saw Vic and Bob move from Channel Four to BBC2 and refining their act in the process. New characters included Slade at Home, The Petomaines, Mulligan and O'Hare the folk singers and Pat Wright and Dave Arrowsmith (two northern types who were convinced people were staring at their bras).

 

SMITH AND JONES

BBC1-Talkback / 30x30m-e / 1989-97 five seasons

Producers: Jon Plowman, Jon Magnusson, Jamie Rix

A continuation of the sketch series Alas Smith and Jones, the same show really but with a channel change to BBC1.

 

SOME MATTERS OF LITTLE CONSEQUENCE

Sketch show starring Kenneth Griffith, Frank Thornton and Sheila Steafal. Amongst the writers were David Nobbs, Peter Vincent, John Antrobus and David McKellar.

SON OF FRED

Equally surreal follow up to A Show Called Fred. Goonish in style and minimalist of set. Peter Sellers starred and Valentine Dyall, Kenneth Connor, Mario Fabrizi, Graham Stark, Patti Lewis, Johnny Vyvyan and Gilbert Harding all also appeared.

 

SPITTING IMAGE

Central-Spitting Image Productions / 137x30m-e 4x45m-e / 1984-96 21 Seasons plus 9 specials

Creators: Peter Fluck, Roger Law, Martin Lambie-Nairn / Producers: Jon Blair, John Lloyd, Tony Hendra, Geoffrey perkins, David Tyler, Bill Dare, Giles Pilbrow

Amazing adult puppet satire based series in which rubber likenesses of prominent people (politicians, celebrities and especially the Royal Family were mercilessly ridiculed with very few people getting off lightly, the show even had a number one hit record (The deliberately inane Chicken Song). Voice artists included Steve Coogan, Rory Bremner, Chris Barrie, Hugh Dennis, Harry Enfield, Steve Nallon, John Sessions, Kate Robbins, Enn Reitel, Jan ravens, Jessica Stevenson and Alister McGowan.

THE STAND UP SHOW

BBC1 / 36+ x30 minutes 1x45 m 1x40m 1x50m / 1995-99

Producers: Claudia Lloyd, Jen Rowlands, Geoff Miles, Karen Rosie
Comedy. A stand up series that was hosted by Barry Cryer, Ardal O'Hanlon and Tommy Tiernan. A pilot edition was broadcast on 18th August 1994 and some big names have appeared including Alan Davies, Phil Jupitus, Kevin Day, Lee Hurst, John Thomson, Simon Pegg, Bill Bailey, Felix Dexter, Caroline Aherne, Patrick Kielty, Fred MacAuley, Bob Mills and Tim Vine. 

 

STEVE GERAY AND MAGDA KUN

BBC / 2x10 minute episodes and 2x15 minute episodes / 1937 black and white

Producers: Dallas Bower, Harry Pringle, J. Royston Morley

Comedy. Four early TV specials for the Hungarian born real life husband and wife team. 
dates were:- 
1. Tuesday 23 March 1937 @ 3.50pm 
2. Friday 16 April 1937 @ 9.45pm
3. Tuesday 18 May 1937 @ 3.00pm
4. Tuesday 7 December 1937 @ 9.15pm 
Obviously these were broadcast live and weren't telerecorded as the process wasn't in use then.

 

THE SUNDAY SHOW

BBC2 / x45m-e / 1995-98

A 'mélange' of different styles of comedy, satirising TV, newspapers etc. Initially on late night then later Sunday lunchtimes. One regular segment of the show had Dennis Pennis (aka Paul Kaye) surprising celebrities at premieres with his outrageous questions. These segments were later compiled into two separate shows  Anyone For Pennis and Very Important Pennis. Katie Puckrick was amongst the hosts.

 

THE SUNSHINE BOYS

BBC1 / 1x60minutes / 3 September 1999 (Friday 8.00pm)

Clips from the golden years of the Morecombe and Wise show. The same evening at 10.20pm saw a repeat of a 1972 Parkinson show featuring a rare interview with Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise. 

 

SWINGING

Sketches about love sex and relationships. Featuring Jo Joyner, David Armand, Dominic Coleman, Ella Kenion and Clare Wille.
 

SYKES - WITH THE LID OFF

Thames / 1x60m-e/ 1971 7 July - Wednesday 8.00pm

Writer: Eric Sykes / Producer: David Bell

An Eric Sykes sketch special that also featured Hattie Jacques, Dilys Watling, Leslie Noyes, Johnny Greenland and Philip Gilbert.
