THE WATER RAT RAG

In 1957 (from 15 September - 1 December) the BBC broadcast a series of stand up shows featuring prominent comedy members of the Water Rats charitable foundation. Acts included Ted Ray, Charlie Chester, Nat Jackley, Jimmy Wheeler, Cyril Dowler (twice), Vic Oliver and Jimmy O'Dea.

A pair of specials for the Canadian funnymen Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster.

 

WHERE WAS SPRING

BBC2 / 5x30m-e 7x25m-e / 1969-70 Season 1: 27 January - 24 February 69 / Season 2: 12 July - 23 August 70

Writers: Eleanor Bron, John Fortune / Producer: Ned Sherrin

Semi improvisational sketch series starring John Fortune and Eleanor Bron. Each edition of season one featured a song performed by The Kinks.

 

WHO DO YOU DO?

Creator/Producer: Jon Scoffield

Fast paced impression based sketch series. Freddie Starr headlined for most of the shows run (seasons 1-4 plus 1st special). Also appearing regularly were Peter Goodwright (seasons 1-2 and 5), Pat Dailey and Bill Wayne (seasons 2-3), Roger Kitter (season 3), Paul Melba (season 3), Johnny More (season 4), Faith Brown (specials 2 and 3 and season 5), Janet Brown (specials 2-3 and season 5) and Little and Large (season 5). Other semi regular performers included Russ Abbott, Les Dennis and Dustin Gee, Michael Barrymore and Aiden J. Harvey. The specials were 1. Christmas Who Do You Do? (24 December 74), 2. A Special Who Do You Do?  (26 December 75). 3. Now Who Do You Do? (20 August 76). Season Four was called New Who Do You Do? and season five called Now Who Do You Do?.

In 1995 Central TV revived the show for 30 new 30 minute episodes (directed by Jon Scoffield), original player Aidan J. Harvey hosted this show.

 

WHO DARES, WINS

Channel 4-Holmes-Who Dares Wins Prod / 22x45m-e 9x60m-e / 1983-88 1 special plus 4 seasons

Producers: Andy Hamilton, Denise O'Donoghue

Sketch series for a late night audience, often outrageous, always funny. Written by the cast and Drop the Dead Donkey creators Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin. The cast was Rory McGrath, Tony Robinson, Philip Pope, Jimmy Mulville and Julia Hills. The best sketch involved a pair of Giant Pandas in a zoo who, whenever visitors were not about, worked on their escape plans. 

 

WILL THE REAL MIKE YARWOOD STAND UP?

ATV / 5x30m-e 1x45m-e / 1968-69 31 December 68 - 4 February 69 Tuesdays 8.30pm

Writers: Tony Hawes, Eric Davidson, Edwin Foxall / Producer: Bill Hitchcock

Comedy impressionist Mike Yarwood, the Rory Bremner of the seventies, appeared in this his first starring vehicle along with Dilys Watling and Len Lowe.

WOOD AND WALTERS

Victoria Woods first starring sketch series (co-headlining with Julie Walters). The series was preceded by a special called Two Creatures Great and Small.

 

THE WORLD OF BEACHCOMBER

BBC2 / 19x30m-e / 1968-69 Season 1: (13 episodes) 22 January - 22 April 68 / Season 2: (6 episodes) 22 September - 27 October 69

Writers: Barry Took, John Junkin, Neil Shand, Ken Hoare, Spike Milligan / Producers: Duncan Wood, John Howard Davies

Sketch series starring Spike Milligan and based on the work of J. B. Morton whose Beachcomber column appeared in the Daily Express. Also appearing were Frank Thornton, Patricia Hodges, Julian Orchard, Michael Redgrave (season 1), Clive Dunn (season 1), Hattie Jacques (season 1), Lionel Wheeler (season 1), Paul McDowell (season 2), Fred Emney (season 2), Arthur Mullard (season 1) and Gerald Campion (season 1).

 

YES, IT'S THE CATHODE-RAY TUBE SHOW 

Associated-Rediffsuion / 6x30m-e / 1957 11 February - 18 March Monday 9.30pm black and white

Writers: Michael Bentine, David Nettheim / Producer/Director: Kenneth Carter

Goon like sketch series featuring one half of that team - Peter Sellers and Michael Bentine. David Nettheim also appeared.
