B - Bagatelle to Butternut Square

BAGATELLE

CBC-Radio Canada / x30m-e / 1974 (5 April - 6 September / Fridays 4.30pm)

Two fifteen minutes segments, the first in French was called Au Jardin de Pierrot (Produced by Maurice Falardeau and featuring children singing folk songs in a playground). The second segment featured a different film every time.

 

THE BANANAS

CBC / x30m-e / 1969 (2 January - 6 February / Thursdays 4.30pm)

Theme Music: Jim Pirie, Rod Coneybeare / Producer: Robert Gibbons

Children's comedy series with a slight educational slant, set in Bananaland and presented by the Bananas -who were:- Melody Greer, John Davies, Francois-Regis Klanfer and Bonnie-Carol Case. 

 

BANDWAGON WITH BOB FRANCIS

CBC / x30m-e / 1972-75 (21 September 72 - 28 March 75)

Producers: Aubrey Tadman, Garry Ferrier / Director: Barry Cranston

Music series that focused on the big band sound, hosted by Bob Francis.

 

BARNEY BOOMER

CBC / x20m-e / 1967-68 (12 September 67 - 9 January 68 / Tuesdays - Fridays 4.30pm)

Writer: Ron Krantz / Producers: Stan Gilchrist, Herb Roland / Director: Flemming Nielson

Teen sitcom. Young Barney Boomer sails his houseboat to Cedarville to pay a short visit to his uncle Captain Boomer and ends up staying. As of January 1968 the title changed to Upside Down and the show opened out to take in more of the town's residents.

BARNEY'S GANG

Children's entertainment show hosted by Barney Potts with each edition seeing Barney and a gang of kids visiting a different place in Vancouver.

 

BARRIS AND COMPANY

CBC / x30m-e / 1968-69 (21 September 68 - 25 January 69 / Saturdays 10.30pm)

Producer: Bob Jarvis / Director: Pat King

A variety series hosted by Alex Barris. The show was dogged by production problems (often because the show was live and followed live Hockey matches - the timings were all over the place). Also featured on the shows were Janet Baird and Guido Bass.

THE BARRIS BEAT

CBC / x30m-e / 1956-57 (4 July 56 - 30 June 57)

Producers: Len Casey, Norman Jewison

An early variety series for Alex Barris (see also above entry). Regulars included Betty Jean Ferguson, Roy Roberts, The Gina Silvi Octet, Gloria Lambert, Sammy Sales, Larry Mann, Babs Christie as the Billboard Girl. Cult director Richard Lester ( A Hard Day's Night, The Three Musketeers etc) was briefly a writer on the show.

 

THE BEACHCOMBERS

CBC / 324x30m-e / 1972-90

Creators: Marc and Susan Strange / Executive Producers: Philip Keatley, Ellie Savoie, Hugh Beard

One of Canada's longest running comedy drama series the Beachcombers was based around Nick Adonidas ( a beachcomber) and Molly Carmody and her family. Nick lived above Molly's diner which was called Molly's Reach.

BEYOND REASON

CBC / x30m-e / 1977-80 (27 June 77 - 10 October 80)

Creator: Allen Spraggett / Producer: Nigel Napier-Andrews

Intriguing panel based quiz show featuring various 'psychic' types (astrologer, clairvoyant etc) trying to guess the identities of mystery guest using various things pertinent to their trade (for example the astrologer getting the birth time and date detailds etc). The series also took in other aspects of the paranormal via short films. During its first season was shown prime time then later in an every weekday 4.00pm afternoon slot (for the 1980 season). Host was Bill Guest. Regular panellists included clairvoyant Irene Hughes, astrologer Geoff Gray-Cobb, palmist Marcel Broekman and graphologist Marilyn Rossner. Paul Soles took over as host for the final season.

 

THE BIG REVUE

CBC / x60m-e x30m-e / 1952-53 (9 September 52 - 18 May 53) black and white

Producers: Don Hudson, Norman Campbell / Costume: Edna Cherry / Director: Norman Jewison

The first show to be seen on the CBC, the Big Revue was an ambitious variety show hosted by Toby Robins and featured all manner of acts (everything from jugglers to ballet). Budd Knapp later took over as host.

 

THE BILL KENNY SHOW

CBC / x30m-e / 1966 (22 May - 10 July / Sundays 3.00pm)

Producer: Elie Savoie

Light entertainment/music series headlined by Bill Kenny, a former member of the Inkspots. Regulars on this show were The Accents, Fraser MacPherson, Marty Gillan, Judy Ginn and Fran Gregory. 

 

BIM BAM BOOM

CBC / x15m-e / 1955-56 (18 November 55 - 13 January 56) black and white

Children's entertainment. The exploits of a trio of clowns, two of whom, Bim and Bam were puppets. Boom (as played by John Allen) was a real life clown.

 

THE BILLY O'CONNOR SHOW

CBC / x20m-e / 1954-56 (16 October 54 - 19 May 56 / Saturdays 11.10pm)

Producers: Bob Jarvis, Drew Crossan

Variety series headlined by Billy O'Connor with Juliette, Jackie Richardson, Vic Centro, Kenny Gill, Jack Duffy and Bill Isbister also appearing.

 

BLACKFLY

Canwest-Global / x30m-e / 2000-

Period sitcom. Tales of the workers of a fur trading fort in Upper Canada during the 18th Century. Main character was dogsbody Blackfly, his boss was McTavish; head of the military garrison was Colonel Boyle and Misty Moon ran the local tavern.

Drama series. A family from Los Angeles move back to the small Nova Scotia town the wife originally hailed from.

BLUFF

CBC / x30m-e / 1976-77 (6 Ocotber 76 - 27 April 77 / Wednesday 7.30pm)

Producers: Riff Morkowitz, Jack Budgell. 

Quiz show in the style of Call My Bluff. This featured comedians lying to each other and trying to guess who was actually telling the truth. Hosted by Mike Darrow.

 

THE BOB McLEAN SHOW

CBC / x60m-e / 1975-81 (1 September 75  -22 May 81)

Executive Producers: Bill Casselman, Jack Budgell 

A lunchtime magazine style show tackling all manner of subjects. Hosted by Bob McLean the show had several regular guests in the form of comics Roger Abbott, Don Ferguson, Sears and Switzer, Howie Mandel and Monica Parker. Other regulars included singer Don McManus and writer Gary Michael Dault.

 

BONJOUR, BON JOUR

CBC / x15m-e/ 1977-78 (19 September 77 - 29 September 78 / Monday - Friday 9.00am then from 29 May 78 10.15am)

Producer: Ken Buckley

Children's daily entertainment show (in both French and English) presented by actress Manon Bernard.

BORDERTOWN

Alliance-Atlantis / 78x30m-e / 1988-91

Period drama series. During the 1880's Marshall Jack Craddock teams up with Mountie Clive Bennett to keep law and order in Bordertown along the US-Canadian border.

BURNS CHUCKWAGON FROM THE STAMPEDE CORAL

CBC / x30m-e / 1954-55 (3 November 54 - 29 June 55 / Wednesday 10.30pm) black and white

Producer: Mario Prizek

Western style variety series with Pat Kirkpatrick, Lorraine  McAllister, Don Francks, Arnie Nelson and The Rhythm Pals.

 

BUTTERNUT SQUARE

CBC / x20m-e / 1965-67 (19 October 64 - 10 February 67 / Monday - Friday 11.30am then 11.00am)

Producers: Don Carroll, Pat O'Leary, Olive Richards, Stuart Gilchrist

Children's Daily entertainment show with a character called Mr Dressup having fun with a group of kids in Butternut Square. Most of the material had a slight educational theme and there was a spin off called Mr Dressup. For the final season episodes went to 30 minutes long.
