Ari
Hest has been threatening to
break through for some time now
and this, his major label debut,
will no doubt be the one to do
it.Lushly produced and very
radio friendly Someone To Tell
is full of what seem to be
confessionals from the heart of
Hest, the boy wears his heart on
his sleeve that’s for sure,
whether he is being beaten down
by love in Anne Marie (“I’m
singing the melody to the
harmony you hum” is a gorgeous
line) and Facsinate You or
looking for a way out in the
stand out track Aberdeen the
honesty of his emotions comes
across.
You
couldn’t place Hest anywhere
but New York, even through the
Motowneqsue styling of the song
Consistency you’ll find his
Bronx roots shining through and
you’ll find him as comfortable
as a pair of favourite shoes,
stylistically he is is close to
new boy John Mayer and the
legendary Paul Simon, some of
the songs here are re-recorded
versions of songs featured on
Hest’s independently produced
2003
album Story by Story but it’s hard to say whether Hest’s style has
changed, his rich baritone voice is probably a little more prominent and the
songs may sound slightly more glossy, but otherwise it’s business as
usual.
