No 48 in the Doctor Who Audio Drama Series

AI stock has shot up by over fifteen percent on news that galaxy-famous scientist Davros, controversial creator of the Daleks, has been hired to work on unspecified technological projects.'

Davros has been given the chance to redeem himself.

Humanity stands on the verge of a new era, but it needs the help of the galaxy's greatest ever scientist. But Davros is dead... isn't he?

From the bunkers and shelters of ancient Skaro to the gleaming Domes of the Future Earth Empire, Davros has always been a man of destiny. Now he's working for mankind's benefit. But how much do we really know about Davros?

Has Davros really turned over a new leaf? The Doctor certainly doesn't think so. But is the Doctor always right?

This story takes place between "The Two Doctors" and "Timelash".

As with so many of these audio drama’s some trainspotter has looked at an intricate “timeline” (does time travel have such a thing?), and thought, there are several milliseconds here where the Doctor wasn’t up to anything let’s fill it in with something.  Then they play the “what if?” game like the characters in “High Fidelity” compiling their top 5 lists or the staff at a comic book publishers coming up with their ultimate “cross-overs”.

That gives a sense of what this story line is about and how it probably came about.  The Big Finish team are sitting around shooting the breeze about The Doctor Who universe over lukewarm canteen tea and some baked goods just south of their best before date, thinking of ways to have a crossover episode.  This one is the Dr Who –v- Davros, crossover.

An unscrupulous corporate leader and his Dalek besotted wife recovers Davros.  He is amazingly revived despite whatever mayhem beset him previously.  Amazingly, our hero just happens to be in the area as he is returned to the incredible domed Corporate Headquarters of TAI.

The story is performed quite competently with the 7th Doctor “Colin Baker” in appearance.  The Terry Molloy, voiced Davros is excellent although disappointingly, he rarely says “exterminate”.  A couple of rrrrolled R’s makes his performance occasionally irrrrrrrritating but on the whole it rrrrrrrocks.

Production is good, with appropriate special effects and only one spot in the caves/mines beneath the dome where without vision there needed to be a little more filling in of what was going on.  There was also the annoying habit of Davros’ voice rising to a pitch and volume, which caused me to have to adjust the volume on several occasions to deflect the attention of others.  So small criticism of the volume levels, which could be very noticeable if listened to through head phones or if trying to be unnoticed such as myself amongst my co-workers.

Well worth a listen, especially if Dr Who meets Davros (again) is on your top five list of rematches.  There was some background about the life of Davros, which I found interesting in terms of the development of the ultimate evil in the Universe.  His mother didn’t understand him?  His father beat him?  Listen and find out information similar to this about how Davros got his start in the evil business.

The audio drama also features some humour and commentary about life and corporations.  Certainly it seems that TAI could have been replaced with Newscorp or AOL Time Warner and it would have still been applicable. Review by Peter Ritchie
