What if... ?

"If I told you the truth, I'd have to kill you..."

The Deep-sea Energy Exploration Project was apparently destroyed by dirty bombs in 2039 AD, turning the surrounding sea bed into a radioactive tomb. Rumours suggest the DEEP was conducting illegal, unethical experiments...

In 2066 the Doctor discovers the research centre remains intact. The terrible truth about what happened twenty-seven years ago will soon be revealed. The Doctor is determined to be the first to uncover and confront the secrets of the DEEP.

But unearthing the past can have terrible consequences for your future…”

I have only been a recent convert to spoken wordbook things and as such came to this disc with an open mind.  I have only listened to a book series being read by an actor.  These discs are a little different in that they involve multiple actors and special effects.

My memories of Doctor Who, were as a child watching them on a black and white television.  That was a daggy series with dodgy special effects.  They were in effect radio plays brought to television and with a low budget at that.

“The Doctor”, that I remember was a complex character.  Through rebirth/regeneration into another human form he was effectively immortal.  The Doctor that I remember was honourable, resourceful and above all peace loving “person”.  Resorting to violence only when necessary, going to extraordinary lengths to preserve human life (although Dalek’s and other nasties were fair game).

The character of the Doctor on this disc was a different kettle of fish of a different colour and that.  The Doctor had apparently been marooned on earth having to abandon the Tardis on an undersea base.  The story covers the Doctor (I think it’s the Doctor) undertaking to recover the Tardis.  Some dodgy pseudo-scientific speak,  dodgier special effects, some acting that was in keeping with the TV Series of yore, an undoctorlike twist at the end and, if this was a Hollywood movie, there is room for a sequel.  I found the script to be simple and probably more in the style of early Dr Who episodes (i.e. limited locations /changes of scene).

Strongly lending itself to fans of either Dr Who (or CD recordings of Radio Plays) this disc is worth a listen especially for the “Fox Moulder”- like character “Ruth”, the cheesy American accents, the line “oh my god it’s a baby…….aaargh” and the ground hog day ending.
