Dust
bowls, dirt roads and paper
moon. Echoes of Nick Drake, Gram
Parsons and even Matthew Sweet
carry through this fantastic
album by Josh Ritter. This
mostly acoustic album by the
American Ritter has a wonderful
melancholic mood with great
lyrics (“you know it’s
perfect because we gotta
leave” - Me and Jiggs).
Ritter
has created a timeless feel, you
can picture a lone guitar player
on a 1930’s porch being
comfortable with some of these
songs but they won’t be out of
place on todays mainstream radio
stations either. Ritter’s
voice, deep and warm, pulls you
into these tales of needing to
escape (probably the main theme
of the album) and late nights in
the long tall grass watching the
stars come out.
Armed
only with his acoustic guitar
and some subtle backing, some
pedal steel, occasional piano
Josh Ritter has come up with one
of the albums of the year.
