AW C'MON / NO YOU C'MON BY LAMBCHOP
Distributor: EMI Records

Reviewer: Sven

Blessed with one of the most individual voices around, Kurt Wagner’s super deep, confessional tone is all over this pair of sumptuous new Lambchop albums.

Similar in tone to each other Aw C’Mon and No You C’Mon are being treated as separate albums. Setting himself the task of writing a new song every day after 2002’s Is A Woman Wagner came up with a bucketload of songs, high on melody, strong lyrically and full of lush string arrangements and melancholic piano and the organic guitar of William Tyler.

Of the two Aw C’Mon is a shade darker, the more downbeat with strings that recall Nick Drake’s hazy days (the album opens with an instrumental – Being Tyler – ala Drake’s Bryter Layter) whilst No You C’Mon is the riposte and flip side of Aw C’Mon as the title makes plain, a much more upbeat affair, more disjointed but every bit as good. No You C’Mon even includes the band’s first fully fledged rock out number, ironically titled Nothing Adventurous Please.

With their mix of bittersweet lyrics and beautifully lush instrumentals both the albums show that Wagner is still at the top of his game. Definitely worth seeking out.
