MICHAEL McDONALD - THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION
Distributor: Rhino

Blessed with one of the most recognisable and soulful voices ever Michael McDonald has been a solo artist for over 20 years and before that of course he was one of the key members of The Doobie Brothers and it’s

certainly about time we had a hits collection traversing his entire career, McDonald has latterly been reworking several Motown classics and the album kicks off with one of his most recent songs, a funky reworking of Ain’t No Mountain High Enough produced by the always excellent Simon Climie (who was himself a bit of a would be soul singer back in the eighties)

we then flit across the years of his career taking in Doobie Classics like What A Fool Believes, Real Love and It Keeps You Runnin’ and solo hits such as his duet with James Ingram Ya Mo B There and nineties cuts such as I Stand For You and Take It To The Heart, it’s a good idea to not take the tracks chronologically as you get the full flavour of is career.

Your age of course will be a factor in which songs will have you strutting your stuff the most but there really isn’t a duff track here and the compilation certainly merits the “Ultimate” tag.

These days McDonald works out of Nashville relishing the organic feel of quality guys playing together as opposed to the homogenised computer muzak that so often passes for soul these days.

A great round up of a classic career that’s definitely worth adding to your collection. Roll on Volume Two.
