Creator: Anne Wood
Quite possibly the first example of psychedelic children's TV, Anne Wood, creator of Boohbah, goes a stage further than she did with her previous show Teletubbies. Aimed at the pre-school audience Boohbah features five possibly aliens/possibly magical atom type beings who sleep in cacoons shaped like a scooped out Avocado, the quintet, Humbah (yellow) , Zumbah (purple), Zing Zing Zingbah (orange), Jumbah (blue), Jingbah (pink) are somewhat teletubbie like in appearance - oversized costumes and a head that can disappear inside its neck. Each episode follows pretty much the same format and quite often includes the same footage, Wood clearly knows how much kids love the
repetition factor in their viewing, why watch something once when you can watch it 8000 times, the Boohbahs will wake up have a bit of a dance before we catch up with various human characters such as Mr Man, Mrs Lady, Brother and Sister etc who examine various everyday objects and also generally have a dance before going back to the boohbahs who play together and then at the end of each episode go back into their
cocoons which are linked to the giant boohball which flies off into space once the boohbahs are asleep.
During the opening titles the Boohball always flies over three (out of 15 used) different countries (Australia, China, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Jamaica, Japan, Namibia, Russia, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom, United States) and the live action segments featuring Mrs Lady etc are filmed in Spain and Switzerland. The editions seen on PBS kids network feature an extra segment of children dancing.
