Documentary with dramatised sequences exploring the life of Mary Anne Evans - a very plain but intellectual woman who frequently shocked Victorian society with her free thinking views and her scandalous relationship with a married man. When she began to write novels she hid behind the pseudonym of "George Eliot" in case her bad reputation ruined the novels chances. Her novels were a great success and once her identity became publicly known she became a celebrated figure.

Gracie Fields is seen rehearsing a song program with her accompanist, and she talks of her approach to her material at this late stage in her career

Great Britons was the overall title for a series profiling ten of the greatest Britons as voted for by the public. Made up of the following programmes:-

GREAT BRITONS - THE TOP 100 
Presented by Anne Robinson this opening 3 hour show ran down the top 100 on the list. The top 10 names were revealed but not placed in a final order.


GREAT BRITONS (documentaries)
There followed over the next five weeks a series of hour long documentaries (2 per week) presented by supporters of each subject as follows:-

Charles Darwin (Andrew Marr)
Diana Princess of Wales (Rosie Boycott)
Oliver Cromwell (Richard Holmes)
Horatio Nelson (Lucy Moore)

Each show was top and tailed by a live segment with Peter Snow showing a leaderboard of the current order of the top 10. Each documentary was complimented by a programme from the BBC archives about the subject.

GREAT BRITONS - THE GREATEST OF THEM ALL
In this final 2 hour show the 10 advocates came together for a live studio debate being questioned by Anne Robinson, with Peter Snow showing how the voting was going using General Election style Computer Graphics.

The top 3 were announced as:- 1st) Churchill; 2nd) Brunel; 3rd) Diana; 

 

THE GREAT WAR
