Film critic Mark Kermode tells the story of the making of Ken Russell’s
controversial 1971 film "The Devils" about religious extremism in 17th
Century France with interviews of crew and cast members. The film was savagely
cut and the full version was believed to be lost. After an extensive search and
on the point of giving up, Kermode uncovered a reel of film that contained all
the scenes cut from the film including the controversial "Rape of
Christ" scene in which the frenzied nuns commit naked acts on a statue of
Christ. The sequence was shown in full during the documentary.
