CABARET

A huge hit on it’s original 1970’s release Cabaret stars Liza Minelli as singer Sally Bowles working at the Kit Kat Club in pre world war II Berlin. Convinced she is headed for stardom Bowles begins a relationship with visiting English academic Brian (played by a pre Logan ’s Run Michael York).

A very good film Cabaret is not really a full blown musical but more of a drama with a musical setting, downbeat in tone, there is an air of gloom about the Berlin of the era, no doubt the heavy threat of Nazism was hanging in the air.

Stand out has to be Joel Grey as the MC at the Kit Kat, just the right measure of confidence and pathos. Liza Minelli is on “high beam” throughout and Michael York is curiously dull. Bob Fosse being a renowned choreographer of course, handles the musical numbers to perfection, most of them you’ll know well enough to hum along to.

No extras but definitely still a film worth having in your collection.
