Bless
This House is almost the
quintessential sitcom
staple in that it
featured put upon
suburbanite stationary
salesman Sidney Abbott
who longed for a quiet
life but had reckoned
without the problems of
his wife and teenage son
and daughter. The show
was created by Vince Powell and
Harry Driver and Carla Lane
was amongst the writers
on the show.
This great 2 disc DVD collection
(each volume available separately)
contains all of the episodes
making up season one (12 in
total 6 on each disc) including
the seldom early black and white
episodes (these make up volume
one, thanks to a technicians
strike it meant the shows had to
be filmed this way although to
be fair most viewers at the time
wouldn't have cared as the
majority of them had black and
white TV's). Sid James was
seldom better than his playing
here as Sid Abbot and he was
ably supported by Diana Coupland
as his long suffering wife Jean
and the lovely Sally Geeson as
his daughter Sally, son Mike was
played by Robin Stewart (who
ended up his career playing in
Australian soaps like The Young
Doctors and Sons and Daughters).
Extras include extensive
production notes, a photo
gallery and original ad caps,
which is always nice to see.
MAN
ABOUT THE HOUSE.
This release of the
flat sharing sitcom
contains the whole of
season one revealing how
would be chef Robin
Tripp (played by Richard
O'Sullivan) came to be living
with seventies hotties
Jo and Chrissy (Sally
Thomsett and Paula Wilcox), this
being the 70's of course
the permissiveness was
all in the mind of the
viewer. This first
series sets up the premise with
most of the episodes revolving
around Robin trying to get off
with Chrissy who of course was
having none of it whilst there
was always a subplot involving
George and the sexually
frustrated Mildred. Writers Mortimer
and Cooke went on to
create the spin off to
this show George and
Mildred (see below). Extras
include production notes, photo
gallery and cast biogs.
George
and Mildred.
AV and Umbrella continue
with their classic uk
comedy range by
bringing us the complete
first season of Man
About the House spin-off
George and Mildred.
There are 10 episodes
on the disc detailing
how Mildred (played by
Yootha Joyce) was
determined to move up in
society when she and
George (played by Brian
Murphy) moved onto a new
middle class housing
estate. The crux of
the plotline for most episodes
was Mildred's trying to get on
with their posh new neighbours
the Fourmiles whilst George does
his best to scupper Mildred's
plans. George and Mildred is a
funny show from an era when the
ITV network and especially
Thames were challenging the BBC
in the comedy stakes. Extras
include production notes, photo
gallery and cast biogs.
THE
KENNY EVERETT VIDEO SHOW:
The Complete Naughty Bits. What
a great release this is, all the
best bits from Kenny's Thames TV
shows and giving us the chance
to watch in one hit all the
episodes of the fantastic
Kaptain Kremmen (this was the
little five minute animated
space adventure hero segment
that appeared each week in
Kenny's show) as well as the
chance to enjoy the antics of
the scantily clad dance troupe
Hot Gossip (admittedly these
seem a bit tame now but in the
late 70's when you were a
growing boy the girls from Hot
Gossip were fantastic). All the
favourite Kenny characters are
here from Sid Snot to Marcel
Wave, Everett really anticipated
the likes of Harry Enfield and
the Fast Show with his ongoing
characters and catchphrases and
this release is very welcome. Extras
include original naughty bits
trailers, a Kenny biog,
production notes, a photo
gallery and the afore mentioned
chance to watch the Kremmen and
Hot Gossip segments
THE
VERY BEST OF BENNY HILL. Sadly
not Benny at his peak here but a
still an opportunity to see the
man in action. The two 90
minute episodes on this release
are titled Benny Hill's Greatest
Hits and The Crazy World of
Benny Hill and both date from
Benny's difficult early 1980's
period when he was being hounded
by the UK press for his supposed
sexism which now seems very tame
in comparison to today's in your
face antics of most TV shows.
There are though some great
moments on this single disc
release including a great take
off of the cop show The Bill and
it is certainly worth adding to
your comedy collection.
