One
of the BBC’s most acclaimed
productions ever Edge is
Darkness is now released on DVD
by Roadshow Entertainment in a
two disc set. First
broadcast in 1985 on the BBC’s
second channel before being
quickly repeated on the BBC1 the
6 part serial won practically
every award going in the year
following it’s broadcast..
Bob
Peck plays Detective Inspector
Ronald Craven who finds his life
unravelling when his daughter
(played by a pre fame Joanne
Whalley) is shot down in cold
blood in front of him. Initially
thinking that he was the target
because of his recent involvement
with terrorist informers in
Northern Ireland.
When
Craven learns that his daughter
(who makes ghostly type appearances
throughout the serial offering
Craven clues and signposts as to
what is actually going on) was
heavily involved with a group
calling themselves Gaia who were
environmentalists trying to
close down a secret nuclear
waste dump.
Craven
goes undercover, helped by Texan
CIA agent Darius Jedburgh,
inside the dump to try and get
to the heart of the mystery.
Edge
of Darkness really captured the
downbeat, anti-nuclear feeling
of the times with it’s inherent
darkness contained not just in
the title or in Eric Clapton and
Michael Kamen’s truly
atmospheric score but in every
frame of the drama. Besides Peck
and Whalley there was a great
cast that included Joe Don Baker
as Jedburgh, Charles Kay as
Pendleton, Tim McInnerny as
Terry Shields and Zoe Wanamaker
as Clemmy.
Edge
of Darkness is a must have for
any TV fan and any fan of
quality drama.
THE
DVD
Like
the very classy Hitch-Hiker's
release this set has some great
extras including some wonderful
material from the BBC archives.
There's a wonderfully poe faced
review from the Did You See
team, then there is an interview
with Bob Peck from BBC's
Breakfast time (see Frank Bough
trying to get more than a one
word answer out of a clearly
nervous Bob), clips from awards ceremonies
at both the Pebble Mill studios
and the BAFTA's (the Pebble Mill
segment also includes an
interview with Bob and producer
Michael Wearing.) The wonderful
score by Eric Clapton is also
available in an isolated
version. And that's just disc
one for disc two also includes
the real gem of the peice - a 35
minute documentary called Magnox
- Secrets of the Edge of
Darkness offering a very
revealing look at the background
to the production. There is also
a photo gallery.
