FATHER BROWN - PART ONE

When people complain that they "don't make em like that anymore" they could well be talking about this classic release from Acorn - Father Brown, (a padre with a nose for murder), was first broadcast on the ITV network in 1974 by ATV. Kenneth More gave one of his best performances as the eponymous father , just the right balance of eccentricity and studied cleverness. Father Brown is classic 1970's television from it's beautifully designed interiors shot on videotape to it's location scenes shot on film. This two disc features the first five episodes of this 11 part series (volume two will feature the final 6).

Created by G.K. Chesterton and set in a seemingly perpetual middle-upperclass 1920's the stories featured here include The Hammer of God in which a lascivious village squire is murdered, the very fun The Oracle of the Dog (which sees a dog helping Father Brown uncover a murderer), The Curse of the Golden Cross (a curse and an archaeologist lead to trouble for Brown), The Eye of Apollo (money and sun worship just don't go together -  there is a great performance from Ronald Pickup in this episode) and last but by no means least The Three Tools of Death which focuses on the apparent murder of a well known Philanthropist played by James Hayter).

The mid 1970's were certainly a golden age in UKTV and Father Brown has been maybe overlooked somewhat when people talk about this era but thanks to Acorn we have the chance to view and own again a definite TV classic.

EXTRAS G.K. Chesterton biography and bibliography, extensive filmographies and scene indexing. The release is also available on VHS.
