PHONE BOOTH
Released by 20th Century Fox. Out now to rent/buy

A straight out of the headlines movie with Colin Farrell as obnoxious and slimy publicist Stu who finds himself trapped in a phone booth under attack from a deadly sniper in the heart of New York City .

The basic premise is indeed very good and is the kind of thing that would have been done as a one set play back in the early days of live TV in the 1950’s.

Of course with a director like Joel Schumacher at the helm small scale is never going to be an option, things quickly get out of hand as the sniper (voiced by a creepy sounding Kiefer Sutherland) shoots a pimp whose “girl” wants to use the phone booth. This then develops into a full blown siege with Forest Whitaker’s police chief arriving on the scene.

Major pluses are the frantic pace of the film (it rolls in at just over 80 minutes) and the way the film unfolds over real time, picking up Stu as he makes numerous calls on his cell phone before ducking into the phone booth to make an untraced call to his would be mistress, indeed the movie was actually filmed over a 10 day period, a very quick shoot by Hollywood standards.

Extras: Intriguing commentary from Joel Schumacher and indepth behind the scenes documentary.
