The show had its roots in the similar UK drama series Within These Walls but this was a much tougher cookie altogether with the women dealing with lesbianism, murder, drugs and the like. Key characters included tough inmate Bea Smith who ruled the roost at Wentworth (Queen Bea as she was known), prison officers Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson and Vera 'Vinegar Tits' Bennett. Other inmates included the elderly Lizzie Birdsworth, lesbian Franky Doyle.  What's good about this box set is that chooses key episodes from the whole of the series so you get to see for instance the first four episodes (which take up disc one) as well as a set of episodes labelled Great Episodes (disc two) which features episode 20 (Franky Doyle and Doreen Burns go on the run), the gloriously funny episode 165 which features a mass breakout under the guise of a kids pantomime performance - Rowena Wallace guest stars in this episode as a none too balanced inmate), then comes episode 471 featuring the notorious escape of Marie Winters and the final episode on disc two is 598 in which Lexie Patterson makes an escape bid whilst a serial killer stalks the inmates. 
Disc Three is titled On The Inside and features the episodes 247 and 248 which features the infamous Sandy Edwards Riot storyline. Also featured is episode 586 which features the arrival of Rita "The Beater" Edwards and finally episode 667, another riot episode again featuring Rita.

THE DVD
Extra's on the DVD are pretty much limited to a quite extensive photo gallery, as with much archive TV the extras just don't exist in the archives, although the set does come in a nicely packaged box set designed to look like the jacket of one of the warders and also features four neat postcards of some of the cast, including a young Peta Toppano from the first episode. Picture and Sound quality is excellent, better even than on it's original terrestrial showing.
