Buying
into the whole Warren Beatty as
sex god mythos Shampoo was one
of the major hits of 1975. Set
in 1968 on the eve of the US
presidential election Beatty
stars as Hollywood hairdresser
George whose main hobby is
sleeping with as many of his
clients as he can, mainly a
satire on the emptiness of the
Hollywood jetset and contrasting
that with the political
machinations of the day
especially the Vietnam war.
Supposedly
based on the real life Hollywood
hairdresser Jay Sebring (who was
killed in the infamous Manson
murders) and featuring a stellar
cast which besides Beatty (who
also co-wrote the picture with
uber screenwriter Robert Towne)
also includes the likes of
Goldie Hawn, Julie Christie, Lee
Grant, Jack Warden and a very
young Carrie Fisher (George
famously takes Fisher’s
teenage character’s virginity
in the film). Top that off
with a groovy Paul Simon
soundtrack and you have a very
1970’s movie that manages to
be just as entertaining today.
