Van Der Valk

This classy crime drama is now on DVD. The complete season one (in a four disc box set) is available on four DVD's, Van Der Valk told the cases of Amsterdam based Dutch detective Piet Van Der Valk. The series has been twice revived in 1977 and again for a series of feature length episodes in 1991-92. The theme music Eye Level by Jack Tromberg reached No1 in the UK Charts.

Each disc contains three episodes except disc four (which contains the final four episodes of the season) and extras include a photo gallery on each disc as well as detailed cast and episode info and an easy to use animated menu.

Series 1 - Part 1 of 4 (Episodes 1,2 & 3)  

Episode 1 – ONE HERRING’S NOT ENOUGH

A sunny afternoon in Amsterdam – a phone call from a stranger – a confession to murder. The opening to a case that startles even the hardened Commissaris Van Der Valk. (Writer & Producer – Michael Chapman, Executive Producer – Lloyd Shirley, Director – Dennis Vance).  

Episode 2 – DESTROYING ANGEL

Van Der Valk is called in to investigate a suspected case of poisoning. A doctor then arouses suspicion with his findings. (Writer & Producer – Michael Chapman, Executive Producer – Lloyd Shirley, Director – Graham Evans).  

Episode 3 – BLUE NOTES

An internationally famous violinist comes to Amsterdam. A bunch of dried flowers, a cryptic note, add to the classic mystery facing Van Der Valk. (Writer – Geoffrey Gilbert, Producer – Michael Chapman, Executive Producer – Lloyd Shirley, Director – Marc Miller).

Episode 4 – ELECTED SILENCE

Episode 5 – THICKER THAN WATER

On a canal a body  wrapped in a shroud breaks the mud surface. A body with a difference. The teleprinter between Amsterdam, The Hague and London chatter with activity. (Writer – Geoffrey Gilbert, Producer – Michael Chapman, Executive Producer – Lloyd Shirley, Director – David Wickes).  

Episode 6 – THE ADVENTURER

A rush-hour accident, a gun, a press cutting. Van Der Valk’s hunch tells him that, for someone, bad news is just around the corner. But nobody wants to hear – and indeed he is right. (Writer & Producer – Michael Chapman, Executive Producer – Lloyd Shirley, Director – Peter Duguid).

Episode 7 – A DEATH BY THE SEA

Van Der Valk investigates the death by drowning of the wife of a very prominent man. A deserted beach, a midnight swim.  Was it just an accident? (Writer – Philip Broadley, Producer – Robert Love, Executive Producer – Lloyd Shirley, Director – Don Leaver).  

Episode 8 – A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE

On the way to a routine case, Van Der Valk finds the body of a man in pyjama trousers on a canal barge. How did it get there? Just the sort of offbeat situation that appeals to Van Der Valk. (Writer – Arden Winch, Producer – Robert Love, Executive Producer – Lloyd Shirley, Director – Douglas Camfield).  

Episode 9 – A ROSE FROM MR REINHART

Arlette thinks that Karen Seger may  be in serious danger and should see Van Der Valk about police protection. He’s had a busy day and just wants to put his feet up. (Writer – Peter Yeldham, Producer – Robert Love, Executive Producer – Lloyd Shirley, Director – Mike Vardy).  

Series 1 - Part 4 of 4 (Episodes 10-13)  

Episode 10 – A DANGEROUS POINT OF VIEW

A man is found stabbed to death in someone else’s flat. Who knew about him and what caused someone to kill him? Van Der Valk investigates a question of “what was the neighbours’ business?” (Writer – Jeremy Paul, Producer – Robert Love, Executive Producer – Lloyd Shirley, Director – Jim Goddard).

Episode 11 – SEASON FOR LOVE

A rich American woman seeks Van Der Valk’s help to find a missing young man. Although no crime has been committed, he discovers it’s not the boy, but the woman herself, who is in danger. (Writer – Philip Broadley, Producer – Robert Love, Executive Producer – Lloyd Shirley, Director – Mike Vardy).

Episode 12 – RICH MAN, POOR MAN

Leo is injured in an explosion and fire at his firm’s premises. Van Der Valk may know who is responsible but Leo takes the blame. He’s clearly lying, so what is he trying to hide? (Writer – David Butler, Producer – Robert Love, Executive Producer – Lloyd Shirley, Director – Douglas Camfield).

Episode 13 – THE RAINBOW ENDS HERE

A kidnap victim’s brother wants to pay the ransom himself without police involvement. Does Van Der Valk stand aside and let the criminals get away?
