BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003

Distributor: Universal Home Entertainment
Certificate: Unrated | Region 1 | NTSC
Director: Michael Rymer
Extras: Yes
Easter Eggs: No ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?
Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Jamie Bamber, Katee Sackoff

The original Battlestar Galactica was the camp show du jour of 1978, fantastic, especially if you were a 9 year old boy, and itself just released in all its glory on DVD, the time has been right for a revamp of this space opera for some time and in 2003 The Sci-Fi Channel broadcast this new release from Universal, a mini series remake of the original 3 hour Galactica story.

As in the original mankind is all but wiped out by the deadly robot Cylon race (created by mankind but they rebelled), only a few vestiges of the human race remain amongst them the crew of the run down ship Battlestar Galactica (the production design is excellent throughout mixing the organic with the sleek) headed by Colonel Adama (Edward James Olmos) and his crew who include his fighter pilot  son Apollo and fellow pilot the feisty take no crap Starbuck (Katee Sackoff), in the biggest shock to the fans Starbuck is here played by a woman, albeit one who talks tough. Back on Earth former Secretary of Education Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell) finds herself the new president (despite the fact that she has cancer).

Easily as entertaining as the original and with some new twists, the Cylons have evolved into humanoid form (although some very sharp looking robots remain with guns that emerge from their hands). A series is very likely and would be welcome too.

Main extra is a 25 minute interesting doco on the making of the mini-series featuring contributions from all the cast and the writers and directors.
