Back in the early 70s movie makers were testing the censors with more honest and open portrayals of relationships and life in general. Carnal Knowledge made in 1971 was one such movie, starring a then very hot Jack Nicholson (who had just made East Rider and Five Easy Pieces) and directed by Mike Nichols (who was on a winning streak having made The Graduate and Catch-22), the movie follows two youngish university students and there quest to lose their virginity.
Whilst this might sound like an early version of American Pie Carnal Knowledge is a different kettle of fish, serious and with a strong hint of sadness the movie also has much to say about the nature of sex as opposed to love.
Nicholson plays Mike and Art Garfunkel in his major acting debut plays Sandy and the movie follows them over the course of 20 years from the fifties to the then present day as they seek as many sexual experiences as possible, both ending up somewhat embittered middle aged men in the process.
A great movie, Carnal Knowledge also has some great performances not least from Ann-Margret who has never been better than here and Art Garfunkel, all sneery arrogance yet
naive about the ways of women. Nicholson of course is Nicholson and is never less than first rate. Candice Bergan also crops up as the long term love interest for
Garfunkels character.
