Christian Bale plays a cop in this futuristic thriller in a world where feelings have been subsumed for the greater good (and to keep people under control) thanks to the emotion suppressing drug Libria, Bale discovers his partner, Sean Bean, is in fact a rebel, not taking his regular dose of Libria and has taken to reading poetry in abandoned cathedrals, Bale, a faithful servant of the state executes Bean but later begins to question what he has done and when he meets another rebel, Emily Watson begins to question the whole system, setting up a fantastic showdown with the powers that be.

Filmed in Berlin and making ample use of fascist overtones in terms of design and of such locations as the Olympic Stadium and Templehof Airport Equilibrium looks fantastic,  much kudos to DP Dion Bebbe.

Bound to draw comparisons with a certain series called the Matrix thanks to its high quota of super fast action sequences and shoot outs but probably owes more to Fritz Lang’s Metropolis.

Equilibrium actually manages to entertain on two levels, not only as a straight out actioner but also as a think piece with its dystopian Orwellian view of the future.

Extras: A pretty straightforward behind the scenes feature called Findingf Equilibrium and audio commentaries.
