Low key Aussie drama starring a certain Hugh Jackman as the
older brother in a family having
to deal with the death of their
father.
Marty Dennis (who co-wrote the script) actually has the
lead role as Barky who hasn’t
been home for some years,
Jackman plays Wace who has been
looking after his father
following a stroke; Wace is full
of anger and resentment towards
Barky who not only has to deal
with his brothers frustrations
but also a meeting with the girl
he walked out on (Marin Mimica).
The kind of movie that would have been a TV Play back in
the golden days of Tv, Erskineville Kings is all about the performances
and these are pretty much first rate, Jackman all unrepressed anger and
Dennis’s all quiet introspection. The cinematography is also top
notch, thanks to numerous overhead shots Erskineville is revealed in all
its seedy glory.
Somewhat on the slow side, not much happens, but still
undeniably an interesting movie and worth watching.
