GEORGE AND MILDRED Series 2
Released by AV Channel - Umbrella Entertainment  Available to buy now.

Definitely to be commended the AV Channel have followed on from last years fantastic set of Britcom releases of such classics as Love Thy Neighbour and Man About the House et al with a whole new raft of releases comprising the second seasons of Man About the House, George and Mildred, Bless This House and Love Thy Neighbour as well as seasons 1 and 2 of Father Dear Father.

These are just great, full of commentaries, extensive liner notes and even the original ad caps and in the case of Father Dear Father a chance to see the seldom broadcast early black and white episodes.

Season 2 of George and Mildred pretty much carries on where season 1 left off, G & M are living in middle class suburbia trying to keep up with the Jones’s (or in this case The Fourmiles). George and Mildred is a sweet show, somewhat farcical, very funny and entertaining stuff.

Brian Murphy and Yootha Joyce have a natural chemistry as henpecked George and the always hoping for more from life Mildred. The other mainstay of the series was of course the Fourmile family next door whose lifestyle Mildred coveted, this release also includes the 1977 Christmas special No Business Like Showbusiness which sees first Mildred and then George playing an ugly sister in Jeffrey Fourmiles Christmas Pantomime am-dram production. There’s a great bonus with this release in the form of two commentaries from George himself, Brian Murphy (in his first ever commentaries) is terrific value, probably one of the most relaxed interviewes we’ve heard, with anecdotes aplenty not just about the show but fascinating snippets, from Yootha Joyce’s collection of Teddy Bears to stuff about 1970’s TV in general touching on such shows as Alcock and Gander and of course Man About the House (the show which first saw the appearance of George and Mildred), there are also extensive liner notes on the 1980 movie version of George and Mildred.
