GIGLI
Released
by Columbia Home Entertainment.
So
what is it with Gigli, it’s
got two very hot stars in the
shape of Ben Afleck and Jennifer
Lopez, direction from Scent of a
Woman’s Martin Brest, cameo
appearances from Christopher
Walken and Al Pacino and a $20
million dollar marketing
campaign, yet it’s about as
appetising as week old
leftovers.
Very
loud and pretty offensive (
Brest
is under the impression that if
you give a character four
expletives to say per sentence
it makes the dialogue more
interesting) Gigli struggles
under the weight of its own
expectations. The plot is
outwardly interesting, that of a
pair of mismatched assassins (Benifer)
brought together to kidnap the
autistic brother of a federal
prosecutor who is out to get Al
Pacino’s crime lord but the
movie (apparently changed
significantly thanks to too many
test screenings) seems terribly
disjointed. Affleck plays the
title role of Gigli (rhymes with
really) whilst Lopez is the
lesbian Ricki, of course Gigli
spends most of the movie trying
to persuade Ricki to sleep with
him.
Brest
never seems sure whether he
wants his movie to be straight
mob flick or romcom and Gigli
ends up being neither.
Having
said all that the movie is
fitfully amusing in parts and
also has the benefit of an
extended Jennifer Lopez workout
sequence.
Only
extras are trailers for other
movies.
