THE
HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN
Released
by Universal Available to buy now.
This
1970 offering from the famed
Hammer studios was their attempt
to inject a new spark into their
Frankenstein franchise bringing
in a younger Baron Frankenstein
in the form of Ralph Bates
(Bates was being groomed for
stardom by Hammer at the time
appearing in other of their
movies such as Lust For a
Vampire and Dr Jekyll and Sister
Hyde). The plot is pretty much
your standard Frankenstein one
of the mad doctor using human
body parts to create his
monster, helped by his dimwit
servant Wilhelm (Graham Jones)
before the monster goes on the
rampage and is chased by the
township, all on the Hammer
backlot pretending to be Vienna
or Bavaria or somewheria.
Probably
a bit dated to todays jaded
horror movie audiences but these
Hammer horrors are always great
fun, full of great British
character actors hamming it up,
this one contains a young Kate
O’Mara, Veronica Carlson,
Dennis Price, the great Jon
Finch, Dave “Darth Vader”
Prowse as the monster, the
lovely James Hayter, Bernard
Archard and Geoffrey Lumsden.
Great fun.
