I’m not suicidal, I’m a happy man, I’m rich and
I’m Scottish, it doesn’t get
better than that.
Any comedian worth his salt is a rock star wannabe, all
that being on stage having a crowd of people responding to you in a big way,
here Scottish comic Craig Ferguson (who also co-writes and directs) gets his
chance to play the Rock star angle.
Ferguson plays Paul Kerr a massive star during
the 1980’s who following a
crazy drunken binge finds
himself sectioned to a mental
institution but his problems
really start when he discovers
he has a teenage daughter Olivia
(played by singer Charlotte
Church in her movie debut)
however Olivia is blessed with a
beautiful classical singing
voice and could provide just the
spot of redemption that Paul
needs as he sets about helping
her reach the big time.
Coming over like a cross between a take me to the top Young
Ones style movie and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, I’ll Be There
is great, very entertaining, very funny and also featuring a top notch
cast -Jemma Redgrave plays
Olivia’s mum, Anthony Head is a slimy agent, Joss Ackland is terrific
as the ageing pop singer Grandad of Olivia’s and there is also room
for the awesome Ralph (Withnail and I) Brown and Phyllida Law.
I’ll Be There is very suited to the small screen DVD
experience, a sweet movie, witty and with a good heart. The soundtracks
pretty good too, especially the opening song by Church and her acoustic
take on the Motown classic (the I’ll Be There of the title).
EXTRAS: Incisive (and very funny) commentary from
Fergusion and his fellow co-writer Philip McGrade; A whole heap of
deleted and extended scenes; A healthy amount of out takes; Cast and
crew filmographies and the theatrical trailer.
