Very Australian, Japanese Story is a wonderfully atmospheric story of finding out who you really are, Toni Collette headlines as geologist Sally Edwards who finds herself having to accompany visiting Japanese businessman Tachibana Hiromitsu (Gotaro Tsunashima) on a tour around key mining sites in Perth’s Pilbara region (with the hope of selling his company some computer software).

The first half of the movie is full of clashes of culture amidst the stunning backdrop of the Perth outback, dusty country towns, you can almost feel the hairs of the back of your neck burning, although get no real sense of why Hiromitsu is even in Australia, acting as he does like a wide eyed tourist.

When the pair are stranded miles from anywhere after their car is bogged they do gain a little more understanding of each other, the movie takes a downturn though when they end up in bed together, Collette discovers Hiromitsu has a wife and kids, the final half descends into real soap opera territory with tragedy making an appearance (we won’t say more).

Definitely worth a look if only for the stunning cinematography by Ian Baker and for the interesting opening third but altogether something of a missed opportunity. Collette though as always shows she is a great actress.
