LIQUID BRIDGE

Released by Paramount. Out now to buy.

It’s not that Liquid Bridge is a bad movie it just has a lot wrong with it, directed by big wave specialist Phil Avalon the movie tells the story of Nick McCallum’s (Ryan Kwanten) attempt to break into the surfing big time – in the telling though Avalon brings Captain Cliché into play, McCallum’s father is played by the ubiquitous Tony Bonner who just happens to have been a pro surfer but is now confined to a wheelchair following a surfing accident, add to this a dodgy drugs subplot in which Nick’s manager (Jeremy Sims) uses him and fellow surfer Dane (Jarrod Dean) to unknowingly smuggle drugs, leading to a spell in prison for Nick. Of course the movie is all about finding your destiny and fulfilling your dreams and without giving too much away you are never in doubt as to how the movie will end.

The cast do their best with the mostly banal dialogue, Simone Kessell has a tough job playing Nick’s love interest, although sexy, she struggles with having to play ze gurl viz ze Fronch accont.

It’s not all bad though Avalon knows his waves and the movie, shot over six weeks on Sydney ’s Northern beaches, has some great surfing footage, enjoyable enough then in a trashy sort of way but nothing we haven’t seen before.

The extras package is pretty useful though containing as it does a 22 minute documentary on the making of the movie, footage from the world premiere (pretty low key at a Sydney cinema), the theatrical trailer and a photo gallery.

No Extras.
