LOLITA
Released
by Fox Entertainment. Available to
buy now.
Vladimir
Nabokov’s novel has always
been controversial and the two
movies that have been made based
on the book have attracted
similar levels of controversy,
first was Stanley Kubrick’s
early 1960’s version with
Sue Lyon as an over aged Lolita
and then in 1997 came Adrian
Lyne’s version.
Now
Lyne’s version is released in
a special edition by Fox. The
movie of course attracted a huge
level of publicity on its
initial release
particularly because Dominique
Swain as the eponymous Lolita
really was under age. The plot
sees Jeremy Irons play the
wonderfully named Humbert
Humbert who is an English
college professor, it’s the
early 1940’s and Humbert is
lodging with Charlotte Haze
(Melanie Griffith) whilst on his
summer vacation, before too long
he has developed very strong
feelings for Charlotte’s young
teenage daughter (Swain) even
going so far as to marry
Charlotte in order to remain
close to Lolita , from there
things get increasingly out of
hand.

It’s
hard to talk non judgmentally
about Lolita considering it
touches on the subject of
paedophilia, made for US cable TV
but given a mainstream cinema
release in many places Lolita does
look good, Lyne throws in some
great cinematography but the movie
leaves a huge sour taste in the
mouth that no amount of soft focus
shooting can take away, this
release does have a good extras
collection though.
EXTRAS:
A commentary from Adrian Lyne
(some key info on his dealing with
the subject), 9 deleted scenes,
Domnique Swain’s
screen test, a dodgy featurette on
the making of the movie, the
theatrical trailer and cast and
crew bios.
