THE
LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY
GENTLEMEN
Released
by Fox Home Entertainment. 2
Disc Set
An
absolutely cracking premise has
LXG, based on a comic book by
the legendary Alan Moore. The
movie features a team of classic
Victorian literary figures (Alan
Quartermain, Jekyll and Hyde,
Dorian Gray, Mina Harker, the
Invisible Man, Tom Sawyer and
Captain Nemo) coming together to
fight a power mad evil despot.
The
opening 20 minutes is top notch
as the team are brought together
following some futuristic
attacks on Victorian Britain and
Germany, hitting high gear the
rest of the movie is a flurry of
special effects, action and
explosions, unfortunately not
all of these work, some of the
effects look just like that -
effects, instead of being
seamless, Hyde just doesn’t
work, all CG but looking like a
rubber suit anyway. Nevertheless
the action is non stop and you
can’t help but go along for
the ride. Stuart Townsend as
Dorian Gray turns in the best
performance, very Johnny Depp,
although obviously Sean Connery
as Alan Quartermain is the star
performer. Peta Wilson as the
vampiric Mina Harker has a
couple of good scenes
(especially when she evades
capture by ripping out the
throat of her would be pursuer)
but is otherwise wasted. Major
plus point has to be the look of
the film, the Victorian opulence
is captured perfectly by
production designer Carol Spier.
Approached in the right way you
can’t fail to enjoy the LXG
spectacle.
