THE BEST OF MAGNUM P.I. VOLUME ONE
Released by Universal Entertainment.  2 Disc Set. Available to buy now.

At last a chance to revisit one of the icons of 1980’s Television with Universal’s new release of 5 classic episodes of Magnum P.I.

This was the role that made Tom Selleck’s career of course, playing the eponymous Thomas Sullivan Magnum, an ex-Vietnam vet turned private eye working out of beautiful Hawaii, Magnum had the added bonus of acting as chief of security at the estate of millionaire Robin Masters with access to Master’s Ferrari into the bargain. Masters, who was heard but never seen, (always away on business but making frequent telephone calls to Magnum) was voiced by the mighty Orson Welles.

Surrounding Magnum was a whole bevy of co-stars chief amongst them Jonathan Quayle Higgins III (and his two ever present Dobermans) who was Master’s main factotum and Magnum’s two best friends Orville “Rick” Wright who owned a bar and T.C. who ran a chopper company.

This two disc set contains five choice episodes from the series including the very excellent feature length pilot Don’t Eat The Snow in Hawaii; The other episodes (taken from various of Magnum’s seven seasons) are Memories are Forever (a feature length episode from season two),  both the feature length episodes make up disc one; Disc two has Black and White (from series three), this is a very intriguing episode focussing as much on Higgins and his army past as it does on Magnum, it also features a guest appearance from Ian McShane; Mac’s Back from season five features a guest appearance from Sharon Stone and finally there is The People Vs Orville Wright from season seven.

Magnum is very entertaining, mixing as it does your standard crime elements with a nice line in self deprecating humour. A real nostalgia treat that actually has a high re-watchability factor. Essential for any collectors of classic TV but of course now we will want a release of the whole series. No extras unfortunately.
