THE MARK OF ZORRO
Distributor: Fox Home Entertainment
Certificate: G | 84 Minutes | black and white
Directorr:
Rouben Mamoulian
Cast:
Tyrone Power, Basil Rathbone, Linda Darnell, Gale Sondergaard
Extras:
No

This stirring adventure is a classic slice from the golden age of Hollywood , with action aplenty, some great set pieces from director Rouben Mamoulian and a great villain in Basil Rathbone.

Tyrone Power (then one of the top stars at Fox) plays the dual role of the foppish Don Diego de Vega and the cunning freedom fighter Zorro (the Spanish word for Fox), carrying echoes of the Robin Hood legend Don Diego returns home to discover his town in thrall to the evil Captain Pasquale (the awesome Basil Rathbone), taking on the alter ego of sword fighter extraordinaire Zorro Don Diego sets about toppling the fiendish Pasquale.

Pretty much combining the plots of The Scarlet Pimpernel and Robin Hood the story of Zorro had been a silent movie with Douglas Fairbanks back in 1920 and also a series of cheapie serials for Republic in the thirties, this 1940 version was a high profile movie, big of budget and full of excitement.

Heavily influenced by the recent The Adventures of Robin Hood (even going so far as to use much of its cast) The Mark of Zorro is definitely the kind of movie they don’t make anymore, its also hugely enjoyable and with its mixture of action and romance, very much worth watching.

No extras.
