MARTIN LAWRENCE LIVE AT RUNTELDAT
Released by Paramount Entertainment.  Available to Rent from 20 May 04

Stars: Martin Lawrence

A He Says She Says review by Knowles and Knowles

Martin Lawrence has become known essentially for his roles in the Bad Boys movies with Will Smith. This DVD is 1 hour 40 minutes of Martin Lawrence doing live stand up comedy. He covers his life from his own childhood to the birth of his children.  He doesn’t shy away from any subjects, talking candidly about his drug abuse and his brushes with death and the eventual rehabilitation.

She says This was horrible.  It was like looking at a car accident; you just can’t look away.  I think I laughed about 4 times throughout the entire routine.  It went far, far too long and I thought it would never end.  He swears without the panache of Eddie Murphy and just ends up sounding offensive.  I found a lot of the things he said about women to be quite off and I have a problem with men who routinely refer to women as “bitches”.  Whilst I learnt a couple of new things about his life, I can’t say that this new knowledge has enriched my life in any way.

He says Lawrence should stick to his day job. He's a better actor than a stand up comedian. The foul-mouthed jokes aren't fresh or funny. And no matter how many times he uses the F-word, it’s never as funny as Eddie Murphy or Billy Connolly. He is a great physical comedian and tries hard to make them succeed, but it doesn’t pay off. While he put all his energy and delivery skills into this performance, I rarely laughed.
